Interesting Insight Into The Mind And Trading

A sort of cliche wise old man approach to learning trading. Such as, "To learn to trade the markets, you must first learn to trade yourself." Not much in the way of trading systems, but it reveals that learning to trade is first a task of conquering your fears. This is perhaps why it is so difficult for most.

This book fascinated me and had instilled a more profound passion and deeper love for the intricacies of Forex trading. It certainly seems to assert that the markets are a mirror of yourself.

A How-to on Belief Change

This book clearly explains how BELIEFS drive cognitive functioning. If you are interested in more accurately perceiving object reality (rather than your filtered versions of it) then this book is for you. Douglas explains how beliefs filter reality. He then goes on to explain how to manage your beliefs, such that you become more adaptive and learn faster from experience. He provides specific mechanical steps for engaging in belief change.

This book is actually about becoming more fully conscious ! Douglas shows you how. Douglas confirms the findings of Ariel and Mack in the book INATTENTIONAL BLINDNESS. To appreciate this book, you really do have to understand the IB phenomenon as described in that book...

"Our committed expectations about the future will act as a force on our perception of market information to control its flow into our mental system in such a way as to avoid a confrontation with anything that doesn't conform with what we already believe is possible."

What Douglas is saying is simple: predictions are beliefs, and you will automatically ignore data that invalidates your beliefs. Beliefs, including predictions and judgments, are in fact filtering your perception of objective reality. This means that what you believe has everything to do with what you notice or perceive.

This book is actually a classic, from a layman, on cognition and cognitive process. The biggest contribution to cognitive science here is the coverage of fear and how fear narrows perception in a very dangerous way for traders. Approach the book as a cognitive science book written by a very experienced and knowledgeable layman and you'll enojy this book tremendously. The subject matter is applicable well beyond the trading domain. However, since trading is so psychologically demanding, it is in fact a laboratory for understanding cognition and cognitive effects produced by emotions like fear. Buy this book if you want the inside scoop on how you actually are perceiving the world around you.

Pearls of wisdom - encrypted over and over

First off let me assure you that Mark Douglas deserves all the generally positive reviews he's received for this book and for "Trading in the Zone." What Douglas has to share is essential, extremely valuable information for both aspiring and veteran traders alike. That said, stand warned that Mr. Douglas has quite a tedious writing style. He suffers (and thereby, so does the reader) from a particularly diffuse, circular, and repetitive style. He gives redundant a bad name. Here's a sample, you be the judge:

"Our committed expectations about the future will act as a force on our perception of market information to control its flow into our mental system in such a way as to avoid a confrontation with anything that doesn't conform with what we already believe is possible." Got that? Then this book is for you.

You don't have to worry about picking between The Disciplined Trader, and Trading in the Zone - Mr. Douglas is so repetitive that he essentially wrote the same book twice. Material from each book is either reprinted verbatim or repeated in a slightly different way in the other.

In fairness, Douglas is struggling to convey some very complex psychological concepts which don't easily distill down to catchy one-liners. Still, for all of his good things to say, Mr. Douglas would only benefit from a good editor.

Stick with it though - the keys to success are buried within. And then re-encrypted over and over.

Great and fun to read resource with a serious subject

Bulls#*t can and should be a fun and often hilarious topic of discussion, but it can quickly become a sad and sometimes horrifying subject once one realizes just how many absurd beliefs are held by so many people. With that in mind, it is great how Collins writes in a way that is both entertaining and yet still serious. This book is not a complete expos� of all the bull out in the world, but Collins does expose the important underlying motivations and deceitful tactics used by various bull-mongerers so that readers can become proficiently equipped to spot bull for themselves. An obvious problem to this book is that its message will likely be ignored by those who need it most. As Collins explains throughout the book, peddlers of bull are too skilled at dodging, denying, and/or ignoring legitimate arguments and evidence to benefit from the more than reasonable message found in his book. But the book's likely inability to better inform those bull-believers who need it most provides more reason for the rest of us to utilize this resource and others like it. Just as vaccinations for infectious diseases become more beneficial to the proximate population as more individuals are immunized, the same goes for our society's ability to cultivate communities where individuals can think critically and not be duped by bull.

Irrationality too deep to be explained in such a short book

This book portrays itself as scientific antidote and critical thinking tool to fight birthers, truthers, holocaust denialists, conspiracy theorists and other quacks. Unfortunately, these targets are just too quirky: science cannot do much about, maybe psychiatry might. It is good to be critical, and Collins provides some really nice examples of uncovering internet rumors and misquotations. But you cannot really fight JFK assisination conspiratists with science.

I would recommend three more constructive books:
*Michael Shermer: Why do people believe weird things (this one tries to understand where do all these strange beliefs come from, and not just offer science antidote).
*Massimo Pigliucci: Nonsense on stilts (this one squarely puts science against law, religion, pseudoscience, and shows how science is different)
*Moti Ben-Ari: Just a theory (basics of philosophy of science in very digestible format: induction, hypothesis, statistics; plus sociology of science, postmodernist critique, reductionism...)

A timely and entertaining guide to critical thinking

The author of this book exposed one of the vilest hoaxes of the 2012 presidential campaign, that Barack Obama's mother once posed for pornographic photos. The author located the magazines that originally published the photos and, on his blog Barackryphal, he showed the photos were published when Obama's mother was only 15 years old and years before she moved to Hawaii where the photos were supposedly taken.

This excellent bit of research alone would make his new book on the art and science of detecting nonsense worth a look. However, he also turns out to be a clear, incisive writer who can tell an interesting story to illustrate a point.

The result is that even inveterate skeptics will find this book a good read. It provides a choice selection of recent hoaxes, conspiracies and false rumours to demonstrate how the tools of skepticism work. Perhaps because the author is a lawyer, the chapter on pseudolaw (legal theory that relies on frivolous arguments) is especially interesting.

As befitting a book on searching for truth, there are extensive notes and references at the end.

About the Author
Eowyn LeMay Ivey was raised in Alaska and continues to live there with her husband and two daughters. She received her BA in journalism and minor in creative writing through the honors program at Western Washington University, studied creative nonfiction at the University of Alaska Anchorage graduate program, and worked for nearly 10 years as an award-winning reporter at the Frontiersman newspaper. This is her first novel.

Beauty, Ferocity, Joy and Sorrow

Having lived in Fairbanks, Alaska for 44 years, I was very anxious to read this book. It has an Alaskan theme and is touted as being written in the style of magical realism. I love literary fiction that is rich in characterization and language and this book has an abundance of both. It is bound to be one of the best books I'll read in 2012. The story is beautifully rendered and rich with metaphor. I could hardly bear to put it down.

Mabel and Jack are homesteaders who come to Alaska rather late in their lives. They are both close to fifty years old when they begin their Alaskan venture near the Wolverine river way in the backcountry. The story opens with Mabel contemplating suicide. She describes Alaska after her failed suicide attempt as a place of "beauty that ripped you open and scoured you clean so that you were left helpless and exposed, if you lived at all". She and Jack are growing apart rather than closer and she misses him desperately. Slowly, they become friends with their closest neighbors, Esther and George, and this helps Mabel some. However, she says of Jack, "they were going to be partners, she and Jack. This was going to be their new life together. Now he sat laughing with strangers when he hadn't smiled at her in years".

Mabel comes from an intellectual family - her father is a professor of literature at the University of Pennsylvania. She feels lonely and empty in her cabin. Just before they came to Alaska she gave birth to a stillborn boy. This was one of the primary reasons she wanted to get away from her family. She felt they were always looking at her and judging her as wanting, talking about her as not being a strong woman. Jack is busy with clearing and farming the homestead and he won't let Mabel help with this. He sees her job as staying in the house to cook, clean and bake her pies. They are barely making ends meet and Jack is contemplating taking a part-time job in a mine next year. Their situation is dire.

The wilderness is described in an awe-inspiring ferocity of beauty and fear. "Wherever the work stopped, the wilderness was there, older, fiercer, stronger than any man could ever hope to be. The spindly black spruce were so dense in places you couldn't squeeze an arm between them, and every living thing seemed barbed and hostile." "Alaska gave up nothing easily. It was lean and wild and indifferent to a man's struggle." Alaska's beauty is also described wonderfully - the northern lights, the wild animals, the rivers, waterfalls, snowfalls and alpenglow. "Maybe that was how a man held up his end of the bargain, by learning and taking into his heart this strange wilderness - guarded and naked, violent and meek, tremulous in its greatness."

The work is too hard for Jack and Mabel is suffering from cabin fever. One night, however, in a lightness of spirit, they decide to build a snow child. It turns out to be a girl with a lovely face, blond hair, blue eyes and chiseled lovely features. Mabel gives it mittens and a scarf as well. Shortly after building the snow child, they begin to see a child darting in and out of the trees. The snow child they built has disappeared and the child they see running around is wearing the same clothes as their snow child had been given. Is she real or is it a hallucinatory figment of cabin fever and overwork? Mabel and Jack see the child, follow her footprints in the snow and even get to meet her. However, no one else has ever seen her and there is no other family living near them with a girl child. Where has she come from and where does she live?

The story loosely follows the metaphorical fairy tale of The Snow Child, Mabel's favorite story from childhood. However, Mabel is fearful of the story's outcome and does not want to look at the coincidences too closely. The girl they meet is named Faina - Fay-ee-na. They begin to grow close to her and their lives change. "Mabel was no longer sure of the child's age. She seemed both newly born and as old as the mountains, her eyes animated with unspoken thoughts, her face impassive. Here with the child in the trees, all things seemed possible and true."

This is a life-affirming book, one that is close to the heart. It is never silly or maudlin. The writing is rich and lyrical, the characterizations full and complete with each person known and mysterious at the same time. We follow each of them through joys and sorrow. In many ways this is a book of perfection, one that is consummate and incomparable to any other I have ever read. I know it will live on in me and that I will have to re-read it. Thank you Ms. Ivey for bringing me back to Alaska through your eyes. What a wonderful way to see this world.

Fall into The Snow

Jack and Mabel live in a time where children were expected in a marriage. Mabel so wants to be a mother but she has only had one pregnancy and that ended in an early delivery of a child that did not survive. She and Jack didn't talk about it they just thought a fresh start was in order so they pulled up roots and started a homestead in Alaska. She with one set of dreams, he with another. Both not expressing them, both not talking, both afraid of the past, both trying to escape, both still yearning for a child.

Mabel sees Alaska as a way to escape from all of the pity she sees in the eyes of family and friends. She just wants life to be her and Jack. Jack knows they can't make it in such a harsh land alone. He is too old to be breaking the land. He needs help. Mabel feels at fault for her inability to give him children but Jack does not blame her...

Just at the right time a boisterous family comes into their life to help them manage their homestead. A family with three strong children. A woman who starts to bring Mabel out of her shell. Also at this time their appears a mystical child. A child that appears the day after Jack and Mabel make a small snowgirl. Is she real or is she a manifestation of all of Mabel's hopes and dreams?

I cannot tell you the joy I found in this book. Despite the overall sadness of the main theme there was much to celebrate within. Faina, the snow child was a delight! In writing her dialog no quotation marks are used so you "hear" it in your head and wonder if she is real or not. She came to me as a whisper on a breeze. I felt as if I had been dropped into a snowglobe and was living in some kind of mystical snow world. The writing almost surrounded me and then fell like the little pieces of snow. This book is special; I cursed my reading schedule because I could not immediately start it over again. I know that I will find more when I do get the opportunity to drop again into Faina's magical world.

It's by no means all magic and light. There is much depth to be found in the tale. Sadness and loss. The bonds of friendship and the power of love and what those two can do to keep a person from completely falling apart. I am not usually one for books with messages but this book stole my heart. It's a keeper and now sits on my top reads shelf. It made me laugh, it made me cry, it made me think. I love a book that makes me do all of that and more.

Lives Transformed by Magical Child

Does anyone really belong to you? If you think of children or spouses in this regard, The Snow Child will stop you cold.

In the 1920's Mabel and Jack settle along the Wolverine River in Alaska. They hope the challenge of homesteading in the wild will wipe away years of grief and give them a fresh start. Instead, they find that work and isolation rule. The hardship of everyday life cuts away at their spirits. Cash is scarce. Hope dimmed. As the cold bites, each tries to survive in their own way.

After a fresh snowfall, they build a snow child in a moment of much-needed frivolity. When they awaken the next morning the snow child is demolished and the hand-knit mittens and scarf they draped on it are gone.

Jack sees a small girl running in the snow. When Mabel glimpses the blond girl, it unifies them. Jack hunts for a moose to keep them from starving in the winter. When he is ready to give up, the magical little girl appears and leads him to a moose. Food for winter is secured.

The little snow girl, Faina has frosty lashes, a cool blue stare, and is always accompanied by a red wolf. She seems otherworldly and Mabel and Jack find her appearances and disappearances disconcerting. They continue to try to maintain contact with her, but she remains elusive. Faina dictates the terms upon which the relationship grows. She brings to them physical gifts, but most importantly she offers hope and love.

The writing in this enchanting book is beautiful. Its direct simplicity reflects the austerity of the Alaskan atmosphere. The wilderness itself is an important character. Jack reflects on the land flowing with milk and honey that was to give up moose, caribou and bears. "What a different truth he found. Alaska gave up nothing easily. It was lean and wild and indifferent to a man's struggle."

Only someone intimately acquainted with Alaska could write so eloquently about its beauty and barrenness. This unique story masterfully juxtaposes the isolation and stillness of the land with its snow-covered beauty and the joys found in the simple life. Ms. Ivey aptly captures the contrast of the mystique versus the reality of homesteading in 1920s Alaska.

If you're looking to build your social media presence, this book is for you! Not only does it describe everything you could possibly want to know about guest blogging, it also includes info about helpful social media and marketing strategies such as building your mailing list, understanding SEO, and building credibility in your area of expertise. The author then provides a step-by-step primer for guest blogging, which is very useful and easy-to-understand.

I had some experience with guest blogging, and this book really enhanced my knowledge on the subject and inspired me to take my guest blogging to the next level. However, the author explains everything so clearly that this would be an awesome first resource for guest blogging newbies as well. Great read!

Must read marketing guide for new businesses

I've heard the term guest blogging before, but the barrier to entry seemed so high (in my mind) that I've never considered it. Until now. Mike Fishbein's book is a clearly laid out marketing plan for new businesses, and he walks through the concept of guest blogging step by step. This book covers the basics of SEO, lays out exactly what guest blogging is, how it can affect traffic to your own website, how it compares to traditional PR, how to find sites looking for guest bloggers, and what to write about. The book does a fantastic job taking the nebulous concept into something concrete and doable. I'm still a bit intimated by the idea, but so much less so than before I read the book. When you start your own business, you are responsible for everything, marketing included, and rich, meaningful how-to guides are an entrepreneur's best friend. This is such a guide. Fishbein also provides a ton of resources throughout the book, so whether you need to back track to get caught up, or want to move ahead, he's got a path for you to follow.

About the Author
Jeff Salyards grew up in a small town north of Chicago. While it wasn't Mayberry, it was quiet and sleepy, so he got started early imagining his way into other worlds that were loud, chaotic, and full of irrepressible characters. While he ultimately moved away, he never lost his fascination for the fantastic, though his tastes have grown a bit darker and more mature over the years. Salyards lives near Chicago with his wife and three daughters. By day, he is a book editor for the American Bar Association; by night, he will continue to crank out novels as long as there are readers willing to read them.

So Guys I Hear this Could be the Fantasy Debut of the Year?

The Sword & Sorcery sub-genre is currently the most important facet of my reading life. This is the sub-genre that got me back into fantasy after a five year hiatus where I read nothing but science fiction. With that in mind, I take the authors and novels of this genre very, very seriously. At first glance SCOURGE OF THE BETRAYER by Jeff Salyards failed to catch my eye. I didn't find the cover immensely appealing (don't give me that look, we all judge books by their cover) and the synopsis sounded like somewhat standard fantasy fare. At second glance, however, one might notice a quote by an esteemed fantasy author, comparing this novel to the works of Joe Abercrombie and Richard K. Morgan. Name dropping of that caliber is the surest way to stroke my curiosity.

With this single blurb SCOURGE OF THE BETRAYER had been elevated to Must Read status. This quote has also set the bar almost impossibly high for poor Mr Salyards. Abercrombie and Morgan? Yeah, good luck buddy! Oh, wait...

Small town scribe Arkamondos finds himself in way over his head when he accepts a commission from the enigmatic Captain Braylar Killcoin and his rugged band of Syldoon warriors. As the company of battle hardened killers embarks on a secretive mission at the behest of the Empire, Arki discovers there are far worse things in life than the mundane histories of millers and merchants...

Enter Arkamondos the scribe, more commonly known as Arki. The tale is told from Arki's first person perspective, putting a less world weary and more naive narrative to the adventures of bunch of professional soldiers. This is the first wise move on Salyards' part. I've read plenty of books about bloody-minded anti-heroes, but few from the point of view of an inexperienced bystander. Arki's understanding of the world in which he inhabits is limited to his fairly limited travels. This allows readers to jump right into the story with a minimum of world building. What world building can be found is handled deftly. Salyards tantalizes with suggestions and remarks, allowing readers to puzzle out the bigger picture for themselves.

Back to the characters. I found Arki immediately relatable and likable. Up until the point in which he meets Captain Killcoin, Arki leads a relatively comfortable life. Recording the deeds of merchants is a safe enough prospect but deep down he is bored. Salvation from boredom is just what Captain Killcoin offers, even if Arki is too naive to comprehend exactly what that means. Which brings us to the aforementioned Captain Braylar Killcoin. What a complex character we have here. With a surname such as "Killcoin" one might expect an abrasive sort of brute with no incentive in life but money. This could not be further from the truth. Though Captain Killcoin is a rough and bristly protagonist, he is hardly one-dimensional. Killcoin's general demeanor could almost be considered manic in a lot of ways. One never knows whether to expect a friendly joke or a cruel barb. The deeds of the past way heavily on this man who is as skilled with his flail, Bloodsounder, as he is with his sharp wit.

At one point Arki declares that he has no love for the man but he would be loathe to see him die, and I can associate with this sentiment. Killcoin is the sort of man you are unlikely to become friends with but he is precisely the type to trust your life with. He can inspire even the most craven of scriveners to feats of courage. Of the members of Killcoin's retinue, Lloi abruptly became a favorite. Much like Arki, Lloi is an outsider to the Syldoon, though that does little to lessen her loyalty. It is rare to find such a pleasurable female protagonist in the Sword and Sorcery sub-genre. Much of the time they seem to fall under one of two extremes. Either they are powerless sex objects or warriors with a serious chip on their shoulder. Lloi manages to be a strong female lead without developing a "screw the world" mentality. She is essential to the company and unnaturally upbeat given her lot in life.

I enjoy the rest of the Syldoon nearly as much. The camaraderie of the group rang true at heart. These are profane professionals who earn their money on the battlefield and spend it on prostitutes and hard drinking. It doesn't matter whether they are swapping stories over watery ale at an Inn or fighting side by side, the Syldoon are quite obviously a family.

The world SCOURGE OF THE BETRAYER takes place in is of the pseudo-Middle Ages European bent but not without variation. Salyards nails all the important details, making the world seem real enough. The story is kept to a deliberately smaller scope than what most would expect. There is a much larger world to explore in future entries to the series. The plausible nature of the locales and people that inhabit the world are crucial when it comes time for Salyards to introduce the more mystical elements. The mundane makes the supernatural appear that much more awe-inspiring and intriguing. As with George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series, a little bit of magic goes a long way and I can't wait to learn more about the Deserter Gods, Memoridons, and the Godsveil.

SCOURGE OF THE BETRAYER is fraught with danger and deception. The conflicts are extremely personal. The violence is brutal and terrifying. No one escapes a battle unscathed, be it physically or mentally. This is the bread and butter of Sword & Sorcery. This story deals with a small component of what I assume will be a wide and sweeping campaign of tremendous proportions.

At first I had intended to make some snarky remark about SCOURGE OF THE BETRAYER being "fantasy debut of the year" as it is so frequently described by critics on Amazon. After reading it I have to grudgingly admit that yes, this very well could be the fantasy debut of the year. Night Shade Books had best cut a massive contract with Jeff Salyards because this author is a significant contender for the Sword & Sorcery throne.

Recommended Age: 16+
Langauge: Heavy and frequent.
Violence: Yes, flails aren't the most elegant of personal combat weapons but they sure are effective...
Sex: Yes, and plenty of sex-talk besides.

I just finished reading RED COUNTRY by Joe Abercrombie (my favorite Sword & Sorcery author) and as great as it was and as much as I loved it, SCOURGE is still at the top of my Best Fantasy 2012 list.

Good read but incomplete

I have read many novels by new writers of late, and this just doesn't quite measure up to the rest. I'm not sure why so many of the reviewers have given it 5 stars. The overall 4.5 stars is significantly skewed the wrong direction. I give it a 3 because I hope the next book makes this one better. As a stand alone novel, it would be much less.

After finishing the book, the only thing I could think of was where is the rest of it. Very little was revealed by the end. I won't give any spoilers away, but because the main character (the scribe Arki) is not privy to the groups secrets, neither is the reader. The other members of the small group repeatedly say, you really haven't told him much have you? Well the reader by the end doesn't know much either. Small events happen throughout the book, but there is no overarching story that is wrapped up. It feels like the book had the last half just chopped off.

I understand the book is meant to be the first in a series, but at this point, I don't know enough to know if I want to read the sequel. What we are given is very well written, and I think I might like the series, but there was very little substance to the current story. The characters are interesting, at least what we know of them. Having everything delivered from the point of view of a noncombatant is different. I thought I would like the concept, but I think it's the reason the book fell short. It severely limited the reader's knowledge of the bigger picture.

Some of the last few lines explain it all:

"there is nothing large or grand in the things happening here. [...] They are small and shadowy. [...] unknown to all but a few key players."

Just Not For Me

Seemed like there was some potential early on but the story never quite reached it. The book is very short and unfortunately nothing really seems to happen. You can basically break the book up into a few big parts. The first 25% of the book takes place in an inn, the next 30% is the grass plains, and the remaining pages are the major fight scene. I understand trying to lure the reader in by passing along info in a piecemeal fashion can be an excellent writing tool, but I didn't have any idea what the point of the story was half way through the book. On the plus side there are very few editing errors and actual writing is quite good. What little we get of the characters is fairly interesting, but unfortunately the plot needs some serious work. I'd pass on this one until the price drops down to a dollar or two.

About the Author
Dr. Keith Folse is a Professor of TESOL at the University of Central Florida. He is the author of 57 textbooks on a variety of subjects from grammar to vocabulary to composition, including five best-selling books in the Great Writing series by National Geographic Learning.

Elena Vestri Solomon is currently a lecturer in the B. Ed program for future teachers in Abu Dhabi's Emirates College for Advanced Education. She received her MA in Applied Linguistics from the University of South Florida, Tampa, and has lived and worked in Italy, Spain, France, Hungary, Romania, Uzbekistan, and UAE. She has authored/co-authored over a dozen academic textbooks in composition, grammar, and listening/speaking/note-taking.

David Clabeaux has taught developmental English, with a focus on grammar, at the middle school, high school, and collegiate levels. He received his BA in English from the University of Buffalo. He currently owns a small marketing firm, gives lectures on Internet marketing strategies to small to mid-sized businesses, and is working on his third book.
