A Classic Reference for Nuclear Thoery

Blatt and Weisskopf is a good, thick compendium of nuclear theory developed from a quantum mechanical point of view. It's become something of a classic it its time, and I think this is well deserved, since it is written with a good flow and clarity and also covers everything a nonspecialist in nuclear physics would ever need to know (and provides a good basis for those who are specialists). The Dover edition is nice and also inexpensive. I would highly recommend it as a reference for all physics and chemistry people.

A classic on nuclear physics

This, as well as Lectures on Nuclear Theory (Dover Books on Physics) by Landau and Smorodinsky, are two books that you must have in your personal library. Both books were written the same decade (this was originally published in 1952). Springer published an update in 1979 and Dover started publishing the Springer edition in 1991.

Compared to Landau's book this is a bulky one: more than 800 pages. So, if you are an admirer of Landau, start with his book first. You will love how much he covers in about 100 pages.

The present book provides much more supporting information for those who find Landau's style too `brief'. Yet, although the book does contain material from quantum mechanics to be more complete (e.g. two appendices), it cannot be read unless someone is already familiar with quantum mechanics. As with Landau's book, and not surprisingly, quantum mechanical scattering theory is a prerequisite to understand it.

timeless and germane

Another classic reprint by Dover. The physics in this is still fresh and germane to a newcomer to nuclear physics. A previous background in elementary quantum mechanics is needed. This text then applies that knowledge to the special conditions in a nucleus.

The measurement of fission products and alpha, beta and gamma emissions is explained. Vital for experimentalists, so that you can deduce what the nuclear reaction was.

The fact that this is not primarily an experimentalist book helds keep it useful. The latter type would need to be updated with the latest instrumentation capabilities and results. Whereas the ideas and derivations here still hold. An added bonus is that Dover's strength is the low price of its offerings. Affordable to the physics student on a budget.

About the Author

Colin MacCabe is Distinguished Professor of English and Film, University of Pittsburgh and Professor of English and Humanities at Birkbeck, University of London. He is the editor of Critical Quarterly and the author of several books, including The Butcher Boy (2007), T.S. Eliot (2006), Godard: A Portrait of the Artist at Seventy (2003), The Eloquence of the Vulgar (1998) and James Joyce and the Revolution of the Word (1978, second ed. 2002). He has produced or executive produced more than 10 feature films and more than 30 hours of television documentaries on the history of the cinema (for the British Film Institute and Minerva Pictures).

Kathleen Murray is a doctoral candidate in the Department of English at the University of Pittsburgh. She received her M.A. in Media Studies from New School University in 2003.

Rick Warner is a doctoral candidate in the Department of English at the University of Pittsburgh. He is the author of articles on New Taiwan Cinema, relations between "old" and "new" media, the films of Chris Marker, and the video projects of Jean-Luc Godard.

best book in the field so far

The best text on the subject of adaptation out there. It does not present a manifesto attempting to define a priori how one should approach the relation between film and literature. Instead, it thematizes the complex notion of fidelity and challenges recent arguments that attack the notion of fidelity and dismiss considerations of it outright. There are sharp disagreements between authors, such as between Colin MacCabe and Fredric Jameson, who wrote the introduction and afterword respectively. There is a range of perspectives represented here, including top scholars in the field of film studies and new voices to the field as well. All in all, however, the essays take as their point of departure the premise that film adaptation develops and expands the source text, adding new dimensions to the human themes that persist over time, even through each adaptation.

Does not Incorporate New Developments in Adaptation Theory

This book has everything going for it - big name editor, lots of major contributors, including Laura Mulvey, Fredric Jameson and Dudley Andrew, and a series of essays on topics to do with literature and film, ranging from early silent cinema to movies of the 80s and 90s. Sadly it does not take into account new theoretical interventions in adaptation studies; it remains confined by the novel-into-film paradigm without acknowledging that 'adaptation' is something fundamental to all human beings, extending into all disciplinary areas. Good as far as it goes, but not really helpful as a cutting-edge collection.

Sufferers of chronic pain well know the frustration of treatments involving endless rounds of drugs or expensive physical therapy--that may or may not offer relief. Doctors Hecker and Liebchen present a comprehensive guide to a new method of pain treatment--acutaping--which offers a much simpler and more effective alternative. In acutaping, an elastic cotton tape, known to many people as kinesio tape, is placed over painful muscles or joints to provide support, relieve pain, and improve lymph drainage, while encouraging full freedom of motion. When a muscle is inflamed or swollen, the space between the skin and the muscle becomes compressed, irritating the muscle’s pain receptors. The therapeutic elastic tape is able to lift the skin away from the underlying muscle, relieving this painful irritation. During the course of normal movement throughout the day, the tape provides a gentle but consistent massage to the inflamed area.

Because Dr. Hecker and Dr. Liebchen draw upon their knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, and the holistic principles of osteopathy, they carry treatment with kinesio tape a step further. A GREAT basic guide for applying tape!

I am a formerly Certified KinesioTaping Practitioner. I teach an informal KinesioTaping class through community education, and always bring this book as a recommended favorite for the lay person. KinesioTape was originally created for lay people to use on themselves, and this book is a GREAT guide for basic applications. Yes, taking an official class is always best and you will learn some nuances for taping the most efficiently by taking a class, but you will still get decent results by following this book. I like how it combines KinesioTaping with acupressure meridians (which, I have found, does work). I like the pictures showing you not only how to apply the tape, but what position to have the body in while applying the tape. It is a GREAT basic guide.

Simple Technique Good Illustrations

Written by 2 doctors who obviously know a thing or two about TCM, Acupressure Taping is a very well-designed and illustrated book showing a non-invasive technique to relieve pain by stretching a length of adhesive tape over the affected area. From the start, the authors distinguish between kinesio-taping from acutaping. It puzzles me that many of the reviewers here have failed to tell the difference.

As the name suggests, acutaping involves the placement of the tape along acupuncture meridians. Thus, the authors stress that acutaping involves knowledge of acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The brief introduction to the basics of TCM is probably more confusing than enlightening. Since the purpose of the book is not go into mind-boggling concepts of Yin & Yang, Five Elements, Internal/External Organs and Six Evils, it would have been better to go straight into acupuncture meridians and show their pathways clearly on the human body.

The authors go on to list the indications, contraindications and caveat. Then, they bring us on a sightseeing tour around the human body. As in acupuncture, bony and muscular landmarks must be recognised. After that, the book goes straight into technique with some very good illustrations on different parts of the body of a female model.

As an acupuncturist myself, I'm eager to use this non-invasive technique, but clinical experience shows that it has limited efficacy for any degree of pain/discomfort that won't go away with aspirin. I would only use it prophylactically or as a follow up to acupuncture sessions.

Nevertheless, for those who are not trained or qualified to insert needles, it may serve a useful adjunct to professional management. Just don't expect it to work for anything more than mild discomfort. I have serious doubts about acutaping working for for diarrhoea, sinusitis, tinnitus and menstrual cramps.

Very disappointing!

Like the other low rated reviews this book was very disappointing. As a massage therapist in the medical field I was hoping to learn more about taping for chronic and acute pains. I know some taping methods and was hoping to learn more but not with this book. I am not really into energy work and this book is all about it.

The reader watches as Onesimus is carried into slavery and finally finds a path to freedom. Then when he comes in contact with the Apostle Paul he finds salvation. Follow the trail as Onesimus makes a choice. Should he return to his master or should he remain hidden in the big city of Rome.

About the Author

Scott Empson is the associate chair of the Bachelor of Applied Information Systems Technology degree program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, where he teaches Cisco routing, switching, and network design courses in a variety of different programs—certificate, diploma, and applied degree—at the postsecondary level. Scott also is the program coordinator of the Cisco Networking Academy Program at NAIT, a Regional Academy covering central and northern Alberta. He has earned three undergraduate degrees: a bachelor of arts, with a major in English; a bachelor of education, again with a major in English/language arts; and a bachelor of applied information systems technology, with a major in network management. Scott currently is completing his master of education from the University of Portland. He holds several industry certifications, including CCNP, CCAI, Network+, and CEH. Prior to instructing at NAIT, he was a junior/senior high school English/language arts/computer science teacher at different schools throughout Northern Alberta. Scott lives in Edmonton, Alberta, with his wife, Trina, and two children, Zachariah and Shaelyn.

Hans Roth is an instructor in the Electrical Engineering Technology department at Red River College in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Hans has been with the college for 13 years and teaches in both the engineering technology and IT areas. He has been with the Cisco Networking Academy since 2000, teaching CCNP curricula. Previous to teaching, Hans spent 15 years in R&D/product development designing microcontroller-based control systems for consumer products as well as for the automotive and agricultural industries.

A Great Resource for CCNP's

This book is very well written with awesome commands, most of the commands that you can find in the cisco route book with added extras that can be very helpful when configuring things that you forgot how. Each command comes with an explanation as to why you're typing in that command and the impact that it makes on the equipment. You'll be hard pressed to find all your favorite and most used commands all in one small useful book complete with diagrams and pictures. The only thing to make it better would be to have it do the work all for you.

This is a great reference to keep on hand when dealing with Cisco routers on a not so routine basis. I need a little refresher every now and then when something has to change so it's a great little book for that use and I can fit it in my laptop bag with ease!

Cheap kjv only study bible

2012 4th edition is in stock at roapm.com rock of ages prison ministry. In the 2012 4th edition, they corrected the footnote at John 3:16 altho there is now a typo extra letter M from the old note. This typo will probably be corrected in future printings or in the 5th edition. The paper cover and vinyl cover (plastic) are the cheapest editions.
In 2003, oxford revised the pilgrim study bible as the new pigrim bible.
The pilgrim study bible had footnotes that are similar to the scofield footnotes which teach the dispensations.
Some of the footnotes explain the archaic english such as in genesis 1:29-30 meat = food of any kind.
The pilgrim study bible was a student bible so the footnotes assume readers are not experts in archaic english.
The Defined King James Bible has more definitions of archaic words.
For the 2003 revision, Jerry Rockwell worked on the Old Testament and Douglas Stauffer worked on the New Testament.
They are both KJV Only fundamentalists so the in text notes they added on rare occasions don't agree with the footnotes (these are probably being smoothed out in the frequent revisions).
There are also in text maps and in text charts.
The Rock of Ages Prison Ministry got the rights to the study bible from oxford and renamed it the Rock of Ages Study Bible. Jerry Rockwell is now the general editor of the whole study bible. The 1st edition was 2007 and the 2nd edition from 2008. 2012 is the fourth edition.
I compared the 2003 and 2008 editions and did not notice any changes in the first few chapters of Genesis. It looks like only minor revisions were done in 2007 and 2008. Both the 2003 and 2008 editions have the last page of revelation at page 1803.
In text notes defending the KJV Only fundamentalist position can be seen in : 2 Samuel 22:6 and Mark 16:9.
KJV text has been modified from the oxford text to the cambridge text bec. fundamentalists tend to prefer the revisions done by the cambridge editors. The KJV text seems to be similar to the text of the Cambridge Concord Reference bible created in the 1950s.
I got the paper cover version and black vinyl (plastic) cover editions to save money. It has gold edges and 1 black ribbon. There are presentation pages at the beginning. Material at the end includes Subject Index, Oxford concordance and Oxford bible maps from 2003.
Rock of Ages Study Bible is a lot cheaper than the other overpriced kjv only study bibles : common man's reference bible and ruckman reference bible. If David Hoffman and Ruckman are not lovers of money, they probably would have paperback or hardback versions of their overpriced leather reference bibles. David Hoffman does allow anybody to quote from his reference bible notes so maybe he is not a lover of money.

I love my Pilgrim KJV Bible!

Awesome Bible!! Easy to understand with footnotes, explanations, definitions, certain meanings and traditions, etc... Makes you want to study the Bible!!! Makes it interesting and find out things you never knew before.
