The Hungry Tigress

I've been reading this book to my children and they are finding them quite enjoyable. There are lots of stories here and we typically read a story before bedtime. My 6 year old finds some of the stories difficult to understand -- there are no pictures. My 10 year old always asks to be read a new story.

Stories of depth and compassion

The foundation of all these stories is kindness and compassion. They touch something deep inside that says "Ahh, this is right, this is how we should truely live." This is by far the best book of "childrens" stories I have ever read. I enjoyed them at least as much as my children.

fantastic (& I generally don't like these kinds of books)

While i like the idea of "helping myself", self-help books have always turned me off. Books i've read seem self indulgent, with the author telling you how awesome they are, all these amazing people they've helped, and how once they share their secret with you everything is going to change, blah blah blah.

maybe it just happened to find me at the right time in my own journey, but i loved this book. It talks in a very clear and straightforward manner about how to simplify your life, your thinking, and your purpose to cut out all the extraneous "stuff" that continually distracts us and focus in on what's really important. People and things (like email!) continual to swirl around us, competing for our attention. When we let them have our attention without being thoughtful, they fill up your life instead of YOU filling up your life and deciding for yourself what your priorities are. It also makes the very commonsense point that when we have 15 different priorities, we have no priorities!

Read this book. I felt like it was a great use of time, it had a lot of important things to say, and it was concise in how it said it.

For sure, this is one of the best books i've read recently. And it deserve the 5 starts, here is some key takeaways:

"If you have a big presentation coming up over the next few weeks or months, open a file right now and spend four minutes starting to put down any ideas. Then close the file. No more than four minutes. Just start it."

" MIX UP YOUR ROUTINES It’s true that doing the same things at the same time, day after day, can get boring. Focus on Essentials!

I rate this book a 5-star not so much because every aspect of the book rates a 5-star, but because the core message of the book speaks into exactly where I am at the current time. I committed 2017 to a focus on essentials. Therefore, this book is of great value to me personally. When I came across this book while browsing through a book store, thumbed through it, and read a few paragraphs here and there, I knew I had to have this book and wanted to read it very soon.

So, I did what every able-bodied person would do in this day and age, I went home and ordered it on Amazon, and with my Prime account I had it in two days. (That gave me an opportunity to finish the book I was in the midst of reading) Here are some key highlights for me personally:

1. The concept on page 16 of the word :priority" historically being singular as in a priority is priceless and is "this-is-the one-idea-that-is-worth-the-price-of-the-book." It is not about priorities, but a priority. The big idea. Get it? I did, but to be sure that was a sound idea I researched it on the Internet from various perspectives to see what others are saying about it, and I an confident that this is true and not a projection of something that might be true. I am using that concept now in my work and ministry.

2. "The way of the Essentialist is the relentless pursuit of less but better." This is on page 5. It coincides with the long tradition of saying that excellence in leadership is not about doing many things right, but doing the right things. (It is like that current commercial that says, "It is not how fast you mow, but how well you mow fast.")

3. The reference to Stephen Covey's saying on page 134 that he popularized many years ago--"The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing."--fits well from an Essentialist perspective. My son who is in sales just attended a seminar this past Friday that focused on this concept and how to use it to balance his life and not overload himself with non-essentials.

I suppose that three is enough. You need to pick the book up for yourself. Parts of the mid to late chapters dragged a bit for me during my first reading of the book, but when I went back and ready the things I had underlined, I realized there was more helpful insights in these chapters than I had first give the book and its author credit for. I recommend the book without hesitation.

THE BEST BOOK ON YOGA! Order it and enjoy it for life!

As a 14-year yoga practitioner and yoga teacher as well as a book lover, I highly recommend this. I have personally trained and continue to regularly study with the ever-so-humble author Swami Sivadasananda, and am so pleased that everyone can benefit from this master of yoga's knowledge in this clear and beautiful book. Very thorough and thoughtful with a superb and organized layout, it is the best book I have seen to address--for both beginner and seasoned yogi--the different aspects of yoga and gives valuable, comprehensible information about how yoga works to tone the inner and outer bodies and harmonize one's mental health. The asanas (yoga physical exercises) are presented clearly and given enough anatomical and physiological information to help, but not overwhelm the reader [in my opinion, not 'clinical,' but rather clear so we can see the body form and not overly aesthetic to deter from the focus of the exercise]. Chapters on positive thinking and meditation, pranayama (breathwork), and, very importantly, yogic vegetarian diet (for personal and environmental health) round out the book to provide a rich and complete system--which is what yoga truly is...not just a bunch of exercises that stretch the body. Prana and other more esoteric subjects are also discussed in accessible language. I especially admire the great consideration that has been given to these crucial topics so they are approachable to the general reader without diminishing their meaning. I have recommended this to all of my students...even those who practice traditions other than Sivananda Yoga. Thank you to Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre and DK Books for a marvelous product!

Covers the Essentials Well

I was introduced to Sivananda Yoga in May 06 by my Shiatsu masseuse. I had several sessions of Shiatsu for back pain relief. However, a few days after the session the pain returned. My masseuse told me that if I practiced Sivananda Yoga once a day it would significantly reduce my back pain. She covered the basic asanas with me in two sessions. I ordered "The Sivananda Companion to Yoga..." and "Yoga 101 Essential Tips". I began performing the asanas on my own using both books as my guide. They are easy to read and fully explain the asanas.

"The Sivananda Companion to Yoga..." is more detailed. It gives a great (but brief) history of Yoga along with breathing, meditation, diet info. and health benefits (in detail using photos). My favorite part of this book is the chart for 30m or 90m sessions and also additional asanas as my routine advances. I use this book when I have more time to experiment with new asanas or as a reference.

"Yoga 101 Essential Tips" covers every basic asana and briefly touchs on diet, meditation, etc. I use this book daily because it covers a complete session.

I am a newby at yoga and highly recommend both books. As a result of doing yoga from them for approximately 3-4 weeks my body feels great, my back pain is relieved and I have either toned or lost inches around the abdomen and thighs which has always been difficult for me. My sugar cravings have decreased (once a daily user of Coca Cola and Haribo Gummies) and coffee is not desired. I am also working on a better diet from recommendations in the book.

101 Essential Tips Yoga

A key part of Sivananda yoga is breathing with the movements. This is sadly lacking from a number of the postures illustreated in this book. There are also some postures which are considered by many yoga schools to be unsafe - namely where the neck is taken back, eg cobra, and double leg lifts. I found the book disappointing and shall not be recommending it.

A hearty thanks to the publishers and Pimsleur.com for resurrecting this wonderful book and making it available to the masses via the Kindle. A print copy, if you could find one, could set you back $2400+ up till now.

And a special thanks to Paul Pimsleurs wife, Beverly, and their daughter Julia, for their vision, tenacity, and determination to republish this book. Their selfless commitment to improve the human condition is now plain for all to see.

This book tells you clearly and concisely how to learn a foreign language. I know of no other book or teaching method surpassing this method of learning ... and I've tried about all of them over the past 40 years. Every tactic Pimsleur talks about in this book, I learned on my own --- the hard way. I wish this book had been around when I began learning foreign languages. It would have made my studies a lot easier.

Pimsleur says that our standard approach teaching foreign languages through rote drills is silly. He's right.

I signed up for a French course in community college in 1968. Within a week I was bored and I dropped the course. Why? The instructor began the course by speaking in French never uttering a word in English. That would have been okay if her emphasis had been on engaging the students in short, conversational stimulus responses rather than rote drills of pronouns and vocabulary none of us understood. She violated the number one rule of language teaching: get the students to listen and talk. Instead, she focused on her knowledge and her power over the classroom mindlessly talking at us until we tuned out. This is one of the faulty teaching approaches Pimsleur cites in his book. Sadly, this continues today. I still shudder at the notion of learning French. But this is a psychological condition. My case is a great example -- and I'm sure there are millions of people like me --turned off learning a particular language because of the teaching method and the teacher. My teacher used a method that she was taught to use. She simply didn't know any better.

Everything Pimsleur talks about is essential to know. For example, I learned long ago to parrot the intonation and speaking styles of foreign speakers by listening to the mistakes they make in English. Their overlay of their native language grammatical patterns into English provided me with vital clues on how to learn their language. For example, my wife and I now teach graduate school courses. She received a paper from a student born and raised in Nepal. The student was intelligent and understood the concepts of the technology course we taught. Her grammar was atrocious and her paper a beacon of errors on how to not write a paper in English. I've saved this paper as a great tutor for me -- when I decide to learn her language -- Tibetan I presume.

I learned Russian in college and improved my abilities through a brief foreign-exchange stint in 1970. But the truth is I learned the language through sheer perseverance, strong interest, hard work, and by inventing methods that I now know Pimsleur invented long before then.

Ironic, isn't it? I can learn Russian, a harder language to learn than French, because I created learning methods, all of which, are mentioned in this book. This, is another one of Pimsleur's points.

Later, I learned Greek fluently with no foreign accent. I also learned a dialect of ancient Greek to an elementary level. Why? Strong interest, desire, perseverance, and so on. I married a Greek and when her parents lived-in our home with us we spoke Greek all the time. I bought the Berlitz and Cortina methods at first. After I gained enough "listen and response" skill, I then bought the three volume, 90-tape cassette course from the foreign service language Institute. I could absorb the course easily once I had the basic listen and response ability down pat.

I report this because learning to listen and speak is the best way to learn a language. Learning to do so with short crisp sentences on matters essential to daily living is the key using between 800 to 1500 keywords in any language. This is what Pimsleur champions. I wish I'd known have of him then.

If you want to learn a foreign language, do this:

1) Buy your courses from pimsleur.com and download them in MP3 format and put them on an iPod so you can take with you everywhere.

2) Don't succumb to the temptation to buy or follow another learning method that focuses on reading and writing until you've learned to speak and respond fluently at an elementary level by ear. There's a big difference between learning to speak and respond extemporaneously than there is to reading and writing a foreign language.

3) Watch out for Pimsleur.com "look-alike" vendors. Many of them use Pimsleur's name but add extra words into their brand. They may be authorized resellers. But you'll find they charge a lot more for what you get. For example, unless you need CDs don't buy them. They cost a lot more to produce and ship and the costs are passed on to you. A level I Pimsleur course, new, costs about $119. Don't get misled by "gold, silver, and platinum programs" offered by some sellers. These folks sell CD's in fancy boxes charging you a lot more for fewer of the same programs you could've downloaded as MP3 files.

4) Once you've mastered the listen and respond process, then buy or follow another method to learn to read and write that language. If you reverse this approach, chances are you will not learn to speak and understand fluently. Trust your ear, not your brain.

5) The visual link language method is good as a follow on method ... but has limited offerings. See: [...]

6) Rosetta Stone is the least effective method, but can be useful for learning to write and troubleshoot grammar AFTER you've learned by the listen and response method. Only you can decide whether it's worth the extra money for the redundancy.

I now have the Pimsleur courses for Swedish, Portuguese, Dutch, and 10 other languages. I'm already fluent in Spanish, thanks to Pimsleur. And I'm having a great time with Japanese - it's a lot easier than you think.

Encouragement for every language learner

This book is a true gem for anyone interested in learning a language. Dr Pimsleur takes out the fear factor in learning a language. In the book Dr Pimsleur explains why 90 % of American high school language learners give up the language they pursued in less than 2 years; and why that is such an unnecessary tragedy. Dr Pimsleur breaks down how people learn language best and explains various aspects of language learning, including what kind of teacher/method you should look for.

I personally have gone through the Russian Pimsleur system and can attest it is better than any other language system out there; at least for me and many others. Every Pimsleur website or brochure you read will explain to some degree why the Pimsleur system works. This book goes beyond the brochures to teach the reader how it can be enjoyable to learn language and how one can go about it; with or without the Pimsleur system.

This book is a quick read, with short easy to understand chapters. If you have ever been discouraged by language learning, please read this book. In it Dr Pimsleur admits that there may be people out there who theoretically cannot learn a language, but from his experience any student with some motivation to learn can and should learn a language; for the simple reason that it will be an enjoyable journey with a pleasant reward.

Very practical.

I am reading the Kindle version of this book after doing all four levels of Pimsleur Spanish. I am an American living in Mexico and bought this book because I feel like my language learnings has slowed. Pimsleur gives all kinds of good practical advice, advice that fits well with a person-centered, holistic world view. The book will help you work with your own strengths and desires and will help you to pick a good language learning strategy and modify it as needed. It will also help you pick a good language teacher and language school.

What I am finding fascinating are the instructions for how to record and create your own language drills and exercises similar to what he does in the Pimsleur audio series. I am very excited to try this out.

Most of the law libraries should save a copy for it's members as a reference for students learning undergraduate or postgraduate courses in medical laws or mental health laws.

About the Author

Tom Altstiel (M.A., University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) is an owner/partner of Prom Krog Altstiel, Inc. (PKA Marketing), an integrated marketing communications service provider. Altstiel is responsible for developing creative strategy and tactics for digital, print, broadcast, and video as well as client service and new business development. Altstiel has developed creative work for hundreds of consumer and business-to-business clients including Toyota, Johnson Controls, Eaton, 3M, Evinrude, and Snap-On Tools. He has won over 250 local, regional and national awards for creative excellence. Since 1999, Altstiel has been an adjunct instructor at Marquette University, teaching Copywriting, Advanced Copywriting, Campaigns and Principles of Advertising. He received the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Part Time Faculty at Marquette. Follow him on Linked In.

Jean Grow (Ph.D. University of Wisconsin–Madison; M.A., University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point, B.F.A., School of the Art Institute of Chicago) is an Associate Professor of Advertising and Director of the Fine Arts Program at Marquette University. Grow has won numerous fellowships and awards including: AEJMC’s Institute for Diverse Leadership in Journalism and Communication Fellowship (2015-16); a Visiting Professorship, University of Modena, Italy (2013); the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation Research Grant (2010-2013); and the Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence (2007). Her academic research appears in publications such as: Advertising & Society Review, Communication & Society, and International Journal of Advertising. Prior to joining the academy Jean worked as an artists’ representative with agency clients such as Leo Burnett, DDB, and JWT on brands including Coca-Cola, Kellogg’s and Zenith. Relatable material!! EASY READ!

Read this book for my advertising class and I have to say as a text book in a class was so easy to get through. The language was easy to understand they used a lot of relatable examples and even quoted from the famous series Mad Men (that takes about adverting in the 60's). Great Book! I still have it and refer to it often!!

Peavey Guitars book review

Fascinating account of Peavey's innovative guitars. I owned a couple of T60's back in the late '70's, and it was interesting to read about the development of that model. Both the guitars and the production methods were highly innovative, and the book goes into quite a lot of detail about that. The only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is that some of the illustrations, especially of Peavey's advertising from the period, are too small to see the ad copy--and there are a few minor typos scattered throughout the book--nothing major, but a little proofreading would have helped. Otherwise I'd recommend this book to anyone who's interested in the history of the electric guitar.

As a musician with a keen interest in rock history, and the evolution of its gear, I could not put this book down. Author Willie G. Mosely delivers a well written documentary of the early history of Peavey Electronics and Hartley's decision in 1984 to add his own guitars to his already seemingly endless line of products for the working musician. With the same mantra as made his amplifiers so successful in the marketplace in the mid 60's, "Quality equipment at a fair price, for the working musician," Peavey took on the "big two," with innovations in product design, production and marketing, drawing the immediate attention of top tier musicians of practically every genre. The research that went into this project is evident, as Moseley takes you virtually step by step throughout the design and production processes, from the original T60 guitar, and T40 bass, through the double-neck customs of the 1990's. Excellent read, highly recommended for anyone with any interest in the history of electric guitars.

From the origins of the T-60 to the Wolfgang, and from the Generation Series to the cutting edge guitars and basses of today; Moseley's in depth research explains the visions and innovations of those who created these instruments. The list of artists is endless! Jerry Reed, Eddie VanHalen, Steve Cropper and Adrian Vandenburg (to name a few) have all created lasting music on a Peavey guitar. That in itself is the legacy. Very well written, though some more practice problems would be useful (not to mention a solutions manual...) THe book presents 18 electorn complexes and the like very well and gives many journals as back up references... Gives a great summary of organometallic reactions (CO insertion, Associative, Dissociative, etc) and a really solid and historically grounded intro to the field of catalysis... Clearly written, for the most part, but one section on the Trans effect is a bit ambigous, in the sense that they never really talk about HOW to use it... Sure they mention the idea, but they never address the leaving group... People always confused on that section... So that is my gripe in this otherwise excellent book...

A simple guide to organometallic chemistry

This book is a wonderfully simple guide to organometallic chemistry. It is very easy to read making it a quick reference for inquiries. I would highly recommend this book to any beginning organometallic student.

decent, not the best

This book is decently written. the first several chapters provide a background introduction into molecular orbital theory with subsequent chapters introducing various ligands and their behaviors in complexes, then reactions and catalytic cycles. unlike other chemistry books i own this one sources the original journal articles of some principal reactions used as examples- which can be helpful for those interested in looking up the original data. one complaint i have is that the book does not provide many examples of types of reactions, nor does it explain the exceptions to rules and why.
