Great book

This is a wonderful book. The glossary and table of all the CD##s are worth the price. The text splits the difference between an engaging overview like "How the Immune System Works" and a definitive reference like Janeway. I found this book to be very helpful in medical school. For someone with little to no background in immunology interested in getting a reasonable med student introduction I'd say start by reading "How the Immune System Works" then move onto "Basic Immunology" to get the details.

Excellent graphics to understand visually

This book is very concise and has excellent pictures and tables to depict the most pertinent information about Immunology. The graphics and tables are all colorful and easy to understand. That said, the book is not as detailed as some other books out there, but for my course I took in pharmacy school, it was good enough. Where it lacked in detail I picked up in the lecture. This book is excellent for understanding immunology, especially if it's your first time ever taking immunology.

About the Author
Dr. Roxanne Brant (1943 –1986), founder of the Northern Florida Christian Center in O'Brien, FL, conducted miracle services and crusades throughout the United States, Canada, and other parts of the world. She studied at Harvard Divinity School, Boston University School of Theology, and Gordon Divinity, earning B.A., M. Div., Th.D, and D.D. degrees. Dr. Brant died in 1986, leaving a ministry that continues to carry on her work in spreading the Gospel message of God's love and healing through Christ.

as all good writing should be

"There remains the mystery of how the pupil devours
so much bastard beauty."

This one line from the poem "The Rewilding" captures my own response to this marvelously rich collection of poems.

Traversing the country of the heart as well as the actual landscapes of Kentucky and New York (where the poet divides her time), we as readers are treated as fellow travelers...privileged to have Ada Limon as our generous guide to striking emotional landscapes, audacious metaphors, and heart-wise reflections of place and home and homelessness.

The poet manages to weave narrative with nature, humor with pathos, the contemporary with the timeless echo of transcendent desire........so much bastard beauty indeed. And how she does it all is blessed mystery, as all good writing should be.

Torn
By Ada Limon

Witness the wet dead snake,
its long hexagonal pattern weaved
around its body like a code for creation,
curled up cold on the newly tarred road.
Let us begin with the snake: the fact
of death, the poverty of place, of skin
and surface. See how the snake is cut
in two—its body divided from its brain.
Imagine now, how it moves still, both
sides, the tail dancing, the head dancing.
Believe it is the mother and the father.
Believe it is the mouth and the words.
Believe it is the sin and the sinner—
the tempting, the taking, the apple, the fall,
every one of us guilty, the story of us all.
But then return to the snake, pitiful dead
thing, forcefully denying the split of its being,
longing for life back as a whole, wanting
you to see it for what it is, something
that loves itself so much, it moves across
the boundaries of death, to touch itself
once more, to praise both divided sides
equally, as if it was easy.

"Art should be a gift." Ada Limon

I’m grateful to another reviewer who introduced me to Ada Limon’s work with a link to the first poem, “How to Triumph like a Girl.” Not surprisingly, that poem won a Pushcart Prize. It also sent me straight to Amazon to place a book order. I love everything about Limon’s poems, their strong feminism, their humor and humanity, and their accessibility. I especially love how she deals with difficult issues that face us all (death, hospice, love entanglements) yet manages to leave us feeling uplifted, part of something greater than ourselves. As she said in a Q&A, “Life is suffering. Art should be a gift.” (I hadn’t finished the book before I looked her up on You Tube and watched two readings.)

Most of Limon’s titles are simple and serviceable, but a few are so captivating I’d jump to their pages in an anthology, like these two: “I Remember the Carrots” displays her fierce determination that surfaces again and again in a proud, ta-da! attitude. Limon often writes in almost a stream of consciousness that feels natural yet is surprisingly compact, taking you on a short, zig-zag path to a strong, unexpected ending. “Oh, Please Let It Be Lightning,” begins with a car trip discussion: “…your mother said she wasn’t sure/if one of your ancestors died in childbirth/or was struck by lightning.” The title would have been the expected punch line, but she ends the poem with a much grander bang.

I’d be reading along, simply enjoying the flow and tone of her work when a metaphor or simile would stop me in wonder. Here are a few of my favorites:

“…As if this big
dangerous animal is also a part of me,
that somewhere inside the delicate
skin of my body, there pumps
an 8-pound female horse heart,
giant with power, heavy with blood.”
(“How to Triumph Like a Girl”)

Love this book of poems! Reading this Book for the Sixth Time-- It's that good!

This book should have won the National Book Awards...it's that good. Accessible, but smart, edgy, and interesting. Ada is an amazingly talented poet who writes in a beautifully musical way while also being able to tell a good story. This is in my top poetry books this year! Highly Recommend!

Curt was a former AP Government and Politics teacher at Northport High School, located in Suffolk County in New York. He is a frequent guest lecturer at law related conferences; and teaches Inside Politics at the CW Post Hutton House lecture series. Curt lives in Smithtown, NY and has Graduate degrees from Queens College and St.John's University.

Good Content Review; Fair Model Tests

In a nutshell, buy this prep book if your goal is a very detailed review of content. If you have actually read your spine text, mastered all its terms, and done well on course quizzes and midterms, then you could likely purchase a skinnier volume than Barron's and do fine. This is too much for a weekend of review, but IS well suited for use over several weeks, a semester, or a year. What Barron's does well -- better than REA and MyMaxScore -- is to provide a comprehensive but focused review. I like the short review questions at the end of each section. Each of these three prep books for US GOPO has fairly poor "model" or practice exams; it's hard to say which is worst on that score. For this reason, I don't advise spending more for the Barron's edition that contains more model exams.

While I would purchase this book again, it's rather like the whole-wheat toast shown next to the sugar-laden cereal in those old TV advertisements. Useful, but most definitely not enough on its own. Remember "part of this healthy breakfast?" You'll want the fresh fruit and milk to really do the job.

To score a "five" on this exam, do these six things. (1) Actually read (gasp!) your spine textbook and master all of its terms. I recommend creating your own notecards by hand, preferably paper. Make your brain and fingers do the work so you "own" those definitions and can then apply them. (Buying ready-made notecards or flipping through other people's work on a screen will not weave the neural connections you want. It's got to be YOU.) Set aside a few minutes each week to review notecards cumulatively. No review means you've merely marked up a pack of cards. If you need to skimp on any textbook area, make that historical detail. Some GOPO books begin with and dwell lovingly on colonial history, but you need to focus on constitutional underpinnings in that section: Articles of Confederation versus the Constitution, impact of Shays' Rebellion, the Federalist Papers, core political values, and contents of the Constitution. (2) Follow news on Congress, the presidency, and the Supreme Court; and pay attention to their interactions with each other. Note how each branch attempts to limit the others and how it interacts with the bureaucracy and linking institutions such as parties and media. (3) If possible, make good use of actual College Board released exams, available from your AP instructor, so you truly understand the types of questions asked on the exam. The model exams in Barron's do have some value in your review, but like those in other prep books, are a poor reflection of the actual exam. (4) Practice writing answers to released essays with a pen, on lined paper, in the time limits given. If you write very little and have lots of time left over, you are likely not fulfilling the prompts. "Explain" means to tell HOW! (5) Memorize a core list of Supreme Court cases, because this will help you master several areas of the course -- not just the judiciary. Understand how cases relate to incorporation, different judicial philosophies, and linkage institutions. (6) Do use a review book like Barron's (or a competitor) for somewhat different coverage of what you know already; but be sure to read College Board's own "Course Description" document for the final word. Most prep books I've seen have some mistakes regarding the exam.

Used this for my CSET Social Science test, and it was a huge help. Can't speak to it for the AP test, but Barron's is a great company, so I'd assume it would be even better for that exam.

The Perfect Book for Me -- So Far

The second edition is pretty new. That's the one I'm commenting on unlike the other reviews at the time I'm writing. The author has either taken the reviews to heart, I'm not far enough along in the book yet, or based on my personal needs and background, I just find this book filling in so many gaps. This book is about learning Node -- not learning JavaScript. Of course, you might learn some JavaScript along the way, but that's obviously not the objective of the book. And in fact, some familiarity with node might be helpful as well. I've been teaching myself JavaScript for the past few weeks. I had used it occasionally over the years but never really took the time to try to learn it. I've also been writing some JavaScript to run on Node. So I'm finding this book is shedding precious light on the subjects I've already been working with: variable scoping, modules, the asynchronous nature of Node, etc. This book, so far at least, is perfect for me and what I'm looking for. If you've never programmed or never programmed in JavaScript, and maybe if you've never done anything at all with Node, this book might not be perfect for you.

First guitar book I have ever read cover to cover!

I can honestly say that out of probably 15+ guitar books that I own, this is the first one that I actually read cover to cover. I did more than just read it, actually - I connected with it and worked through it , fully understanding each concept and then moving on to the next. I am very satisfied with the purchase and look forward to getting more of Joseph Alexander's excellent books. Having played guitar for roughly 35 years, on and off, in a mostly self taught manner, I have always felt very inadequate in terms of my actual understanding of what I was doing. It feels great to finally be opening that door, with Mr. Alexander's help, and actually beginning to understand what my fingers have been up to all these years.

Very useful and practical

This is an excellent book. As a trained musician who serves in Worship Bands, I often encounter guitarists with a lack of music theory understanding. This book is excellent remediation. I bought for our new worship leader and decided to,read it before giving it to him. A hidden bonus is found on page 53 where begins an excellent and useful discussion of key changes. Congratulations on writing a very useful and practical book.

Excellent explanation of guitar theory in laymen's terms

This book is an excellent instructional tool for guitarists interested in understanding basic music theory as it relates to scales and chords. The Circle of Fifths for Guitarists does a great job of explaining how scales and chords are developed as well as how to apply the knowledge in creating songs. I have been playing guitar for 30 years and have never taken the time to learn music theory until now. The book presents the knowledge in a way that makes it easy to follow and understand. The writer, Joseph Alexander, has created a useful resource for guitarists everywhere looking for a better understanding of how the circle of fifths works. If you are a guitarist looking for more insight as to how scales, chords, and music theory relate I suggest you purchase this book. thinking bad things are always happening to you

This book completely changed my way of thinking. It's not that I had the "victim" mentality all of the time, but we all have our days, right? Reading this made me feel empowered (what a concept, right?) and confident that I could take on whatever was thrown my way. Life is all about how you view it. You can either be a victim; thinking bad things are always happening to you, that people are always against you. Or, you can be a creator; and look at "obstacles" as opportunities or challenges. Instead of thinking "why is this happening to me?", you think "okay, how am I going to make this better or prevent it from happening again?"

I can't even explain how many times I've wanted to throw this book at people and say "OMG read this! It will change your WORLD!" but throwing things, especially books, are typically frowned upon... so I just recommend it instead.

Anyway, read this book, pass on the knowledge, and save the world from whiny people :-)

Absolutely life-changing.

I'm not a person who typically identifies with a victim mindset, BUT I definitely have those problems that I can't ever seem to get out from under them. Regardless of what I do, they seem to go away for a while, but then always come back. THIS BOOK CAN HELP YOU WITH THAT. Told in a parable-style story, it's an easy and enjoyable read. I can't recommend this book enough.... wish I could give it 10 stars!!!

The Power of T.E.D. - a lesson we could all use!

Written in the form of a short story, David Emerald takes us on a journey that teaches or reminds us of how relationships work in regard to our personal maturity and growth. You learn that there is a triangle in which you become one (or sometimes more) of the individuals: The Victim, The Persecutor, or The Rescuer.

Better still, is the lesson of how to move the 'players' to an 'empowerment triangle' where you become one (or sometimes more) of the individuals: The Creator, The Challenger or The Coach.

I was apprehensive about the book because my boss insisted everyone read it. Nevertheless, I gave in and was pleasantly surprised to learn how people at work, at home and in other areas of your life try to 'force' you into being one of the unhealthy players.

We also choose to play these unhealthy roles -- or, better yet, choose to play the healthy ones. We become what we allow, and this short read has a very powerful story that we can all implement into our relationships in a way that we and others can interact and become more healthy.

Life changing book!!!

Since beginning the Awakening the Church workbook, I have received joy through the conviction of the Holy Spirit in many areas of my walk with Christ. It has empowered me, reminding me of my value and worth and that God has a perfect plan and purpose just for me! I have been encouraged to waste no more precious time being envious of others intimate relationship with Christ, but to focus on developing my intimacy with Him, as well as create an atmosphere where His presence is welcomed. It has put me in a place of humility and given my heart a new desire . . . a deeper thirst to be pleasing to my Father. It has convicted me to rid my life of habits that were of no value to me or His kingdom. I have experienced true joy in consulting with Him on matters that I previously wouldn't allow Him to be a part of . . . joy came in asking, hearing His voice and ultimately being obedient.
