I studied with this book, plus two other supplemental ...

I studied with this book, plus two other supplemental books and 3 different 90 minute online practice exams. When I say study, I mean I wrote down each incorrect answer and researched the subject deeper than what was in the study materials. When I actually took the exam, about 3/4 of the questions were not on ANY of the study materials. And all 6 practice ones did not have overlapping questions. I was able to pass by 2 points, and I was able to use deductive reasoning to figure out some of the responses. If you get the book make sure you supplement and use additional resources as this book alone will not suffice.

Not a good buy if you're only taking one exam

The book was honestly a waste of money for me, as I only took one exam CLEP has to offer. The book has practice tests for all exams you can take, and would be a good resource for anyone who is looking to take multiple tests. It also only contains one single practice test for each exam, and aside from an answer key there is no further instruction on the reasoning for each correct answer. If you are taking only one CLEP, just buy the PDF guide directly from College Board as it has the exact same practice test available in this book.

Terrific book, for people interested in architecture or art

I am an artist and I purchased the ebook version with an interest in learning to draw houses the way Mr Ofir teaches in his online course. That said, i was frustrated with the ebook, as i would have hoped to be able to "get up closer" to the drawings" than i could. Presumably, with the affordable paperback hard copy, when it comes out, this should not be a problem, since i assume that the ebook was deliberately made without HD resolution for a reason. Perhaps i am wrong...in any event, that small complaint aside,i loved this book. Not only did i learn more, and more painlessly than i thought possible, about the history of English dwellings, but it was a real pleasure to have such a panoply of Ofir house drawings all in one place. He is a real master of the "home portrait" and as he puts it, he .feels the perspective in such a way that he never uses a ruler in his drawings, yet these portraits look both perfect and yet somehow without the strict regimented look that use of rulers tends to promote. To me it is the difference, if Ofir will forgive the analogy, between the liveliness of a house by Disney (not that Ofir's houses are cartoonish, not at all) and a blueprint of a house by your local "architect and co." Disney's houses are human, they actually laugh and sigh. Using his own very unique and different style, Ofir's great talent is that he draws houses with life being lived in them, living houses, houses as people's homes. The houses may not be Disneyesque, but i would i think not be wrong in saying that each has its distinct personality. Highly recommended. For anyone interested in history, art or architecture. Also some delightful memoir added as well.

Beautiful book, fascinating historical info

Architectural history is fascinating to me. You can learn so much about how people lived when you can see their homes and understand each feature's function. This book has several characteristics that make it different than others I've seen. First is a general history of the period, whether Tudor, Georgian, Victoria, 1930s, etc. Next, the author goes into the specific home and its history. Some homes have served other functions - one was even a prison. Last and most importantly is the artwork. Stunning...and I love "the twist."

It's amazing to me that the UK, with various wars throughout history, has managed to preserve these homes. They are national treasures, in my opinion. I especially appreciate the artist's attention to detail. It's obvious that he loves the homes and the process of preserving them in art. Highly recommended book!

Really interesting

This is a really interesting visual and written history of English houses over many centuries. Eli's drawings are great and it's fascinating to see them next to photos of the houses with informative text about their construction and era. It breathes life into them. It has deepened my understanding and appreciation of the houses that I pass every day.

THEY ARE THE BEST FOR A FIRST READ!

Enid’s early works include the ‘Secret’ books about Peggy, Mike, Nora and Jack. They were the catalyst which encouraged me to start reading more than 50 years ago. Thank you, Enid.

The BBC, many public libraries, local authorities and alleged educational experts have been completely wrong about the worth of the Blyton works. I can remember having substantial difficulty obtaining the original versions of the books. Quite a few shops would not stock them then but they were wonderful stories for teenagers! The tales are great to read for their simplicity and straightforwardness.

When one did find copies of the book they were quite expensive all those years ago but great to own. I loved the physical appearance of the books as well which I treasured as a youngster with the way in which the books were produced then making them somehow much easier to read.

It’s a delight to read these stories of adventure again in middle age although recent editing has diminished some of the memories I have of the original editions and words used then (but I am now getting old).

Never mind… these books remain one of my best friends for life: they began my own reading adventure so do read these special adventures for yourselves.

One of the best for the beginner

Like Gerle, and perhaps Auer, this is a book that an advanced beginner can easily learn from. So many books on Violin Playing, e.g. Szigeti, Galamian, and Flesch require an advanced knowledge of violin technique. This book, though not for an absolute beginner, is very accessible and really does get down to the "Basic Principles of Violin Playing" maybe even more than Gerle.

This is the third book published by the author, and the third one I bought and read. I am glad this expert has devoted his efforts to write this nice introductory book to "brain oscillations". In my opinion, reading this book is mandatory for anyone interested on EEGs and their quantitative study. It is a book that will help many people to understand why oscillations are so important for several disciplines, including psychology, psychiatry and neurophysiology. I tried to use the underlining options of Kindle when reading the book (that can be read in just two afternoons, since is very well written and easy to understand, which is by no way the same as being easy to write,on the contrary! ) but I declined because I was underlining almost everything!

About the Author

Diane Schmitt began teaching English in Japan and currently lives and teaches in the United Kingdom. She is Academic Team Leader for EFL/TESOL at Nottingham Trent University, where she coordinates all English language instruction at the university. She also contributes to the master’s program in English Language Teaching. Her research interests include issues related to the acquisition of English for academic purposes and second-language testing. She is a regular contributor to English teaching conferences.

Norbert Schmitt began his EFL teaching career in Japan, where he taught all levels of students for six years. After completing his Ph.D., he began lecturing at the University of Nottingham, where he is currently Reader of Applied Linguistics and Co-Director of the Centre for Research in Applied Linguistics. He is an active researcher in all aspects of second-language vocabulary studies and has published several books and numerous research papers in this area. He frequently presents at language-teaching conferences and consults on vocabulary learning and testing issues internationally.

A great vocabulary book!

I purchased this book to use in an intermediate ESL reading/writing class. It contains tons of exercises on the collection of academic words called the Academic Word List. I highly recommend it. This list was put together from the analysis of a corpus of articles from a range of academic topics, and it identifies words that are used in academic English across the board. My students are most interested in these words because they appear frequently in the Reading and Listening passages of the TOEFL IBT and in textbooks they will be reading after they pass the TOEFL.

A good way to teach the AWL

I have used Focus on Vocabulary to teach the Academic Word List to advanced ESOL students for several years and found it a wonderful tool for a non-credit Adult Literacy class. The chapters are self-contained, so we just cycle around whenever we get to the end and start again at the beginning. Students can enter at any point and not feel they've missed anything, and it's doable in one academic year if you meet more than once a week. I'm shocked to learn that it's no longer in print; I prefer this one-volume version to the many several-volume alternatives publishers have come out with more recently.
