I love this book and all the books hence the 4 stars. I will say I agree with the other reviewer in saying it is getting annoying having to keep buying books. I don't mind a cliff hanger and then having to buy a 2nd book but now I have to impatiently wait for book number 4. I guess I wouldn't be as annoyed if they were all out but I hate waiting. plus 2.99 is a little much for a quarter of a book, .99 cents probably would be more appropriate.

Great Story- Not so great price

So, the books is great. Great characters and great story so far. I don't like the fact that I have to pay $2.99 for each and every chapter! It starts to add up! If you want some great sex and awesome story lines, read Evangeline Anderson. Her Kindred Brides series ( sci-fi/ romance ) are awesome, and you get the WHOLE BOOK for $2.99!
I wish this author all the best, but these prices are ridiculous. You have to think of your customers too, if you want a loyal fan base, make sure you keep them happy. This is more like a .99 book. Reading a "book" under ten minutes should not cost you $3.00.

fantastic!

I thought that part 3 was fantastic. The storyline is progressing well and providing the readers with some nice backstory on the main characters. The end of this installment has me chomping at the bit for part 4 to see what happens next. I, along with the other reviewers, hope that part 4 follows quickly on the heels of the third part. The only thing I could possibly suggest as an improvement would be to make each installment a bit longer.

Penzler Pick, January 2000: It all started with Cornell Woolrich, whether using his own name or the pseudonym William Irish, if you're talking about creating suspense.

Take Phantom Lady, the first book under that pseudonym. Now, the idea is commonplace. You've read a dozen books and seen a hundred movies with the same plot idea, but this is where it began.

A condemned man, due to be executed for a crime he didn't commit, watches and feels the weeks and days and hours slip away as the moment of his execution approaches.

In case anyone reading the book doesn't quite get it, doesn't quite understand what it means to be able to count the hours before certain death, Irish begins each chapter with a time check. The first chapter is headed: "The Hundred and Fiftieth Day Before the Execution." Chapters 16, 17, and 18 state "The Eighth Day Before the Execution," "The Seventh," and "The Sixth." There are no other words in those chapters because nothing happens. But Scott Henderson is in jail and, so help me, the reader by now feels nearly the same tension that the poor guy must have been feeling. He didn't kill his wife, and he knows he didn't, and we know he didn't, but no one else knows. Oh, yes, one other person knows. The killer knows.

If you can't stand the suspense, don't read this book. If not knowing what is going to happen next, or in the end, makes you too tense, don't read this book. You won't be able to stand it. --Otto Penzler

A classic from a master read in a superb facsimile

Cornell Woolrich or William Irish, the pseudonym he used for this title and others, was the master of dark intense suspense novels, filled with nightmare circumstances thwarting average people's lives. One such tale is PHANTOM LADY wherein Scott Henderson is the hapless soul beleaguered by a dead wife, strangled with his own necktie, and by the police demanding to know his alibi. The only hope he has is the dim memory of a woman in a pumpkin colored hat complete with a huge feather he chatted with in a bar after the argument with his wife. But because he hasn't a name nor a description, other than the hat, the police aren't quick to believe him and when witnesses to their conversation all claim she was never there, his world spirals into an inexplicable nightmare.You won't find a suspense novel as tight, swift and dark as this around much anymore and read in the spectacularly reproduced original dust jacket art and meticulously recreated boards, the experience might only be matched if you were able to own an original gem. But then who could afford to? Much better to read this masterpiece as the facsimile!

A Desperate Search

When you see an opening chapter of a book titled `The Hundred and Fiftieth Day Before the Execution', as this one is, you get an immediate impression of what lies ahead, as well as a sense of inevitable doom. I found this to be a very clever method of piquing the interest, compelling me to read on.
The man facing execution is Scott Henderson, and we meet him as the story opens when he picks up a girl in a bar based solely on her outrageous hat. For some reason he's in a foul mood and pays her little attention, even though he takes her out to dinner, a theatre show and then back to the bar. When he gets home to his apartment he is greeted by the police...and the body of his strangled wife. Things start getting really interesting from here on out.
We find the story revolving around the careful recounting of Scott Henderson's movements on that night as he desperately tries to establish an alibi. As the title of the book suggests, the lady he was with that night has disappeared, leaving him in deep trouble. Chapter by chapter the clock ticks down building tension and adding an enormous feeling of desperation to the search. Three people, each of whom is willing to put themselves in danger to see that justice is served, conduct the search for that elusive alibi. Firstly, Henderson's girlfriend / mistress gets herself deeply involved, at times placing herself in extreme danger. The second person is an old school friend who Henderson calls, in the belief that he is the only person who would care enough to help. And thirdly, and most surprisingly, is the police officer that was instrumental in seeing Henderson convicted. He begins to hold grave misgivings about his guilt and provides the impetus behind their quest.
Cornell Woolrich expertly weaves an exhausting tale as lead after lead is explored in an all out effort to save Scott Henderson's life. As can be expected, given the nature of the chapter titles, the story culminates in a nail-biting ending, making it a most satisfying reading experience.

Gripping mystery

“We’ re just companions for an evening. Two people having dinner together, seeing a show together. No names, no addresses, no irrelevant personal references and details…”

Scott Henderson is a condemned man. Time is of the essence. His wife, a victim of apparent foul play; yet Henderson maintains his innocence. All clues point to him, and now he awaits his death sentence. A woman who he was with could prove an alibi, but where is she? She’s a phantom: no one knows her, no one has seen her. It’s as if she has literally become invisible.

Above all things, I think Phantom Lady is an effective mystery in that it excels in holding us in suspense for the majority of the plot. Part of the mystery is uncovering bits and pieces that could possibly give credibility to Henderson’s case, but there is also a bit of a mystery figuring out why everyone involved is so hush-hush about this ill-fated night. As we get further into the case, and as Henderson awaits the days until his execution, Woolrich pushes us closer with hints and clues, careful not to reveal too much. Moreover, there is an unexpected event, a twist that definitely threw me for a loop.

Phantom Lady is my first read from Cornell Woolrich, and it won’t be my last. Woolrich has a way of putting the average individual in very dark and seemingly unmanageable situations, and then we see if they can worm their way out. There is an aura of fatalism that seems to grip the narrative as well, something that reminded me a bit of a David Goodis work.

If there is one knock on Phantom Lady, it is the meticulously detail by detail explanation in the conclusion (after the final big reveal). We are beat over the head ad nauseum with how it went down.

Other than that, I was very impressed with Phantom Lady, and looking forwards to more reads from Woolrich.

Loving What Is

I first heard about Khalil's inspirational story on the Rich Roll podcast and I was compelled to learn more about his story because he emanates an incredible peace and calm. In particular, I was moved by his ability to forgive the people in his childhood who had caused the traumas which ended up pushing him toward a reckless life of drug addiction. His acceptance/surrender of his past allowed me to start moving toward my own journey of forgiveness and self-acceptance. His book can be deeply healing for anyone because its underlying themes of unmet childhood needs, trauma, self-acceptance, redemption, friendship and finding significance are universal. The fact his life is particularly fascinating being under the employ of multiple celebrities, the depths of drug addiction and finding a life of purpose, service and love. Without spoiling the book, the amount of serendipity in this story is incredible and beautiful, and redemptive.

Powerful

This is probably one of the best addiction books I have ever read (and I have read hundreds of them!) I myself have been in recovery for 4 years. I was a raging alcoholic and I have 2 nephews (ages 20 and 23) who are addicted to meth and heroin and are both sitting in prison at this very moment. That is the very reason I chose to read this book....I wanted to gain more insight on what fuels a heroin addict. My family has been torn apart for many years, thanks to addiction. I only pray that once my nephews are out of prison, they will see the light just as Khalil did.
