Perfect book and perfect horror

I found this book quite accidentally. I am thrilled that I did because it is an excellent book and so completely beautifully written (and translated).

Carrere is a wonderful writer. His character, Nicolas, is so amazingly realistic. His thoughts, the way his mind wanders from thought to idea, his lack of confidence, his lying without explanation. All this makes Nicolas compelling and empathetic.

Although a bit of a thriller, this story is also a coming-of-age story. Nicolas is forced to grow up while attending a two-week ski-camp with his class. He yearns for acceptance and love and to be "one of the boys".

He IS accepted and he IS loved, and right before the end of the book, he IS indeed "one of the boys". Unfortunately, there is one more chapter or two . . . and, that changes everything and changes Nicolas forever.

The Mustache:
The mustache is also a shocker, although quite different from Class Trip. It is also perfect in its horror. The main character shaves off his mustache, but his wife doesn't seem to notice. When he mentions it, she insists that he never had a mustache. Ever. He proves that he did with the tufts of hairs he shaved and with pictures he finds. However, that "evidence" soon disappears and, once again, his wife (and his friends, too) insist he never had a mustache.

Well, if he had a mustache and they are lying, they are taking the joke awfully far. If they are not lying, he is going insane.

Carrere's writing is extraordinary. He is able to grasp fleeting thoughts and ideas that most people have but do not articulate. The story itself is nerve wracking yet the reader is compelled to continue. It's a shocking story with a major shock at the end that will leave you stunned for a few moments. I actually had to re-read the last few pages because it was such a stunner.

He writes better books than Class Trip

First, I haven't read Mustache yet so this is only about Class Trip.

He is a very good writer but... Class Trip is boring, overdone, not much fun or intrigue. Lame little boy has bad dreams and is scared of wetting his bed. Big deal.

Read Careere's "The Adversary" and Philip K. Dick biography. Great books. He's much better in the confines of nonfiction.

A great buy, well worth the money, it explains a lot that happened in the movie too.

Review of Leslie Smith Dow's other work: "As a young child I was enthralled with the popular musical, The King and I. The story had all the makings of a perfect fairy tale, with Anna captivating the heart of the King of Siam. Now, with a new film version of The King and I about to be released I wanted to find out more about the real woman behind the well known legend.
Through extensive research and detective work, author Leslie Smith Dow has successfully peeled back the layers of myth to reveal a very different, but equally extraordinary Anna. Through her research she debunks some of the details of Anna's early life revealing a very unromantic childhood of poverty and squalor. This book took me right into the heart of this extraordinary woman as she struggled to survive as a young widow with two small children. Her life as a Governess at the Saimese Court was fascinating, but equally impressive was the life she led after leaving Siam. I was very interested to read of her many accomplishments in Canada after moving to Halifax Nova Scotia with her daughter and son-in-law. She worked very hard to make her mark on both Halifax and Montreal leaving a lasting legacy of work that remains to this day.
Leslie Smith Dow has done a remarkable job of giving us a true portrait of Anna Leonowens and I highly recommend this book."

About the Author
Leslie Smith Dow is the award-winning author of several books, a poet, short story and novel writer, a former newspaper reporter and freelance journalist. An e-edition of her award-winning book, Adele Hugo: La Miserable, with a new Afterword, is now available from Goose Lane Editions. She was selected as the Canadian Authors' Association Air Canada Award winner for Most Promising Canadian Writer Under Age 30. She has been listed as a finalist for the Trillium Writing Award, as well as other non-fiction writing awards offered by the Ottawa-Carleton Regional Municipality and the Ottawa Citizen. She was a winner of the Dartmouth Literary Award (non-fiction), and a recipient of grants from the Canada Council, City of Ottawa and Regional Municipality of Ottawa. Leslie has been a juror on the City of Ottawa and Regional Municipality Arts Awards Committees as well as a contributor and former member of the selection committee of Bywords.ca on-line poetry journal. She has written for numerous Canadian newspapers, magazines and journals as well as national and international publications. She lives in Ontario, Canada, where she keeps bees beside the St. Lawrence River.

Good detail, too much personal politics

My assessment of this book, one of the few providing a full examination of the subject, is an "average"--meaning that for its detail it is worthy of five stars, but the relative lack of objectivity by the author calls its credibility into question. Adele is of course a "victim" of the "patriarchy," although even Dow is forced to admit that her actions were in large part influenced by neo-feminist George Sand, and not for particularly positive results. We are told Adele supposedly had potential to be a great writer, even more so than her father, although this is just a "conjecture" on Dow's part, because much of Adele's writing was done in almost indecipherable code that only she could fully comprehend (and also could have been evidence of her growing madness). The credibility of the author is particularly questionable in regard to Adele's father, Victor Hugo--who even more than Albert Pinson is the "villain" of the story. Not only does Dow ignore his progressive politics which included support for universal suffrage, but attempts to degrade his literary accomplishments at every opportunity (there is no mention, for example, of the universally-acclaimed The Hunchback of Notre Dame or Les Miserables; to do so would expose her opinions to more obvious ridicule).

Victor Hugo in this narrative is nothing more than a womanizer, a domestic tyrant and a over-rated poet and author of whom there is no logical explanation for his fame. As for Pinson, it has to be admitted that for all his personal failings, one could not truly blame him for his attitude toward Adele. After all, it was she who casually turned down his marriage proposal for the sake of her feminist theories, and her subsequent pursuit of him seemed to him evidence of a very bizarre and unstable personality (which was, in fact, the case). Sure, he took money from her like she used her father like a bank, but whose fault was that?

Still, the book manages to give the impression that a great deal of effort went to uncovering as much detail as possible into the life of Adele Hugo, and in fact there is no denying that sometimes fact can be more fascinating than fiction. Even Dow cannot entirely white-wash the sad reality of her life, since simply in its telling one cannot escape the sense of a life terribly misguided by emotional an mental instability.

I had watched the movie 'The Story of Adele H and I wanted to read about her.. This book was wonderful and very sad.. Poor Adele I think she may have had Borderline Personality disorder.. Not that I'm a shrink or anything :-)

Historical Novel of Colonial Quebec

The Golden Dog is a historical novel of Quebec during the reign of Louis XV. The main character is Angelique de Meloises, who is as unscrupulous as she is ambitious. She's so ruthless she enlists the aid of the local witch, and that doesn't end well for anyone.

Equally important in the novel is Col. Pierre Philibert, an honorable man who is attempting to stop a cadre of dissolute French (the Grande Compagnie) from taking advantage of the colonists of New France. The compagnie plots against Philibert to further enrich themselves with the material goods of the colony.

Apart from a disparaging reference to George Washington, I enjoyed this historical foray. Since those who opposed the American Revolution fled to Canada, this sentiment is not surprising.

Le Chien d'Or

Le Chien d'Or continued on in legend in Quebec City, and in the 1940's there was a tavern by that name. I read the full edition of Kirby's story in the one pictured here, part of the New Canadian Library series published by McClelland and Stewart (starting in the 1960's). My memory is that the bourgeois Philibert was a Huguenot, and that the populace preferred to trade at his trading house because it was far more fair than dealing with Intendant Bigot and his corrupt cronies. It is good to remember that Kirby is a 19th C Anglophone writing about mid-18th C Quebec - interesting perspective.
If readers find the full version a bit tedious, one can buy the 'school edition' published by Musson Book Co. (used book) in 192?. The Golden Dog was a standard part of the public school curriculum in the 1930's.

Has good information and is also helpful to non-dog owners who come across unfamiliar dogs in public

I bought this book along with another book on pugs for my teenage son who will be having his first dog at his dad's house. We have never owned a dog in our home so I felt it would be beneficial for him to read up on dog ownership for when he is at his dad's house. This book was a useful tool in helping us to understand dog's and their body language.I found it useful myself as someone who has never been a pet owner. I know more about dog's behavior and body language which is very helpful when I go for walks and come across dogs who often are not on leashes. The book is a very quick read, but informative nonetheless.

I enjoyed this book and have referred to it a few times. It explained alot of the body language of dogs and how they communicate with each other. I would recommend anyone who has a pet to read.

About the Author
Joan L. Slonczewski received her BA from Bryn Mawr College and her PhD in molecular biophysics and biochemistry from Yale University, where she studied bacterial motility with Robert M. Macnab. After postdoctoral work at the University of Pennsylvania, she has since taught undergraduate microbiology in the Department of Biology at Kenyon College, where she earned a Silver Medal in the National Professor of the Year program of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. She has published numerous research articles with undergraduate coauthors on bacterial pH regulation and has published six science fiction novels, including A Door into Ocean and The Highest Frontier, both of which earned the John W. Campbell Memorial Award. She served as At-Large Member representing Divisions on the Council Policy Committee of the American Society for Microbiology and as a member of the editorial board of the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology.

John W. Foster received his BS from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science (now the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia) and his PhD from Hahnemann University (now Drexel University School of Medicine), also in Philadelphia, where he worked with Albert G. Moat. After postdoctoral work at Georgetown University, he joined the Marshall University School of Medicine in West Virginia. He is currently teaching in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine in Mobile, Alabama. Dr. Foster has coauthored three editions of the textbook Microbial Physiology and has published more than 100 journal articles describing the physiology and genetics of microbial stress responses. He has served as Chair of the Microbial Physiology and Metabolism division of the American Society for Microbiology and as a member of the editorial advisory board of the journal Molecular Microbiology.

Excellent Textbook

If you've forgotten most of intro to biology and genetics this book is great for you. It gives you all the background information you need to understand the subject. The figures in the book are well illustrated and help you imagine what's really going on.
I'd recommend this book to anyone taking a microbiology class. It's a good read!

Great alternative to the much more expensive hard cover available in most bookstores!

This book can be a little dense and excessively wordy, and it doesn't delve as deeply into the medical implications as much as I would've hoped. However, as an alternative to the required text book for the school, it's great. (Because it's so much cheaper!) You should probably know that although it's a soft cover, it's not got holes to be able to put it in a three binder like some other soft cover books. Also, it's the international student edition, so trying to sell back to the school will probably not be a success. Still, you can always just sell it back to Amazon!
