Review
“Harrower's drama positively explodes with unresolved, and possibly irresolvable, concerns . . . his brooding ambiguity and his dry, resonating poetry culminate in one of the most daring new plays of recent years.” ―Sunday Herald

It hurts. And that's good.

Fantastic script. Powerful. Painful. The dialogue pattern is difficult to get used to, but it really lends itself to the feel of the play. This is not for the faint of heart. This is a difficult subject, and not for every audience.

because the female lead is that good!
By Kevin Mulhare
Superb writing! I bought this for an acting class assignment. I'll be playing the male lead. The young women in my class are all fighting it out to play the female lead part - not necessarily because of me but, rather, because the female lead is that good!

Blackbird
By brinsonsark
I ordered this play out of curiosity. William Petersen is one of my favorite actors, and he played Ray in a Chicago production of "Blackbird". He got rave reviews and an award for his performance, so I just had to find out what it was all about.
The play is written in an unusual, but natural style. It's full of people arguing, interrupting each other, and finishing each other's sentences. It depicts an encounter between an ex-convict, Ray, and Una, the young woman he sexually abused as a child. The language is frank, perhaps disquieting. The story deals with very current issues, and definitely gives one much food for thought. Of course, there are no easy answers, just like reality. It deals with both characters in a kind way, pointing out their humanity and their faults. "Blackbird" addresses the question of whether one's past mistakes should haunt them forever; but it also deals with the irreparable harm done to the victim. Is Ray a monster? Does he deserve to start a new life, now that he has served his time? Will Una be able to move on, now that she has confronted her abuser? Again, no easy answers, but this gripping drama poses questions that are worth considering, and it gives the audience a peek into the private worlds of both characters. I recommend this play, and I WISH I could have seen it in person.

Fundamentalism: The Search For Meaning, by Malise Ruthven

Since the end of the Cold War, fundamentalism has been seen as the major threat to world peace, a conclusion that was burned into our consciousness on September 11th and that is reinforced almost every day in the Middle East. But what exactly is fundamentalism?
Here is the first book to explore the real nature of secular and religious fundamentalism worldwide, highlighting the many different forms fundamentalism can take. Examining Christian, Islamic, Jewish, Buddhist, and Hindu sects, Malise Ruthven offers a sweeping look at this phenomenon, examining its historical, social, religious, political and ideological backgrounds and providing a critical view of the burgeoning literature on this highly diverse set of movements. Fundamentalism, he concludes, is a problematic term that defies easy definitions. Coined by American Protestant evangelicals in the 1920s, the word's meaning has expanded to include radical conservatives and ideological purists in many spheres of activity, not all of them religious. Fundamentalism embraces Islamic radicals in the Muslim world as well as the militant Israeli settlers who oppose them. It has been used to describe Sikh, Hindu and even Buddhist nationalists who seek to justify their political agendas by reference to divine edicts or religious tradition. Ruthven agrees that there are some "family resemblances" between different fundamentalist movements, especially over concerns of national identity and gender, but he ultimately questions its usefulness as a term.
One of the world's leading commentators on Islam, Malise Ruthven writes with a clarity and directness that never fails to engage the reader. In this superb volume, he guides us through what is clearly a complex topic, but one that is vitally important in the modern world.

Excellent discussion and description of religious extremism
By David Southworth
This short book by Malise Ruthven provides a discussion of the meaning and context of religious fundamentalism (Ruthven often refers to it as the F-word). Ruthven looks at different aspects of the phenomenon, comparing and contrasting fundamentalists, traditionalists, and those who believe in the inerrency of their given religious texts.
The most valuable insights of this short book are the two on relatively long chapters on fundamentalism and nationalism, and how the two often intertwine and provide justification for the other.
The only weakness is that Ruthven focuses a majority of his efforts on the three "Abrahamaic" religions, i.e. Christianity, Islam, and Judiaism. There are some incursions into eastern religions (especially the recently kicked out of government BJP in India). Other than this, the book was an excellent effort to discuss this pressing topic.

Sadly relevant
By bjcefola
This is an extended essay on the nature of fundamentalism, its historical roots and its relationship to religion and nationalism. The book is not just about Islamic fundamentalism, but rather fundamentalism as a 'family' including Christian, Jewish, and other siblings

The most crucial insight is that fundamentalism is not about religion but about fighting the oustider. The core issues of fundamentalism, for example homosexuality, women's rights, or evolution, are often of token significance within religion. Fundamentalists choose issues based on their utility in drawing lines between themselves and others, the focus is on fighting rather then on God. The fundamentalist strives for unity by removing the outsider, and pluralism is the worst kind of heresy.

Another insight is the relationship between fundamentalism and nationalism. They're both about drawing lines of separation, they both have shrines and saints, and both can be used to justify murder. They are essentially symbiotic, the one promoting the other.

Recommended as a first book on understanding the 21st century.

A very solid, readable introduction
By tarihci202
This short volume (available in hard and soft cover editions) is a very solid and accessible introduction to the topic. Like most contemporary scholars, Ruthven treats the issue of Fundamentalism as a reaction to the challenges of modernity. As a way of demonstrating this, his approach is comparative and cross-cultural, including not only the Abrahamic religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, but also serious treatment of other traditions as well (most notably Hinduism, but other religions are covered).

This being said, his primary concern is the development of fundamentalisms in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam and the majority of the work is devoted to trends in these three religions. In this (and in his emphasis on modernity), the work is similar to Karen Armstrong's THE BATTLE FOR GOD. Armstrong's work is far more detailed but, in my opinion, Ruthven is more analytically sound.

While certainly not the last word on this very important subject (the scholarship on fundamentalisms is both rich and broad), this is a fine introduction, well thought out and well written. A useful book for the classroom and an enjoyable read for everybody else.

Cyclonopedia: Complicity with Anonymous Materials (Anomaly), by Reza Negarestani

At once a horror fiction, a work of speculative theology, an atlas of demonology, a political samizdat and a philosophic grimoire, CYCLONOPEDIA is work of theory-fiction on the Middle East, where horror is restlessly heaped upon horror. Reza Negarestani bridges the appalling vistas of contemporary world politics and the War on Terror with the archeologies of the Middle East and the natural history of the Earth itself. CYCLONOPEDIA is a middle-eastern Odyssey, populated by archeologists, jihadis, oil smugglers, Delta Force officers, heresiarchs, corpses of ancient gods and other puppets. The journey to the Underworld begins with petroleum basins and the rotting Sun, continuing along the tentacled pipelines of oil, and at last unfolding in the desert, where monotheism meets the Earth's tarry dreams of insurrection against the Sun. 'The Middle East is a sentient entity - it is alive!' concludes renegade Iranian archeologist Dr. Hamid Parsani, before disappearing under mysterious circumstances. The disordered notes he leaves behind testify to an increasingly deranged preoccupation with oil as the 'lubricant' of historical and political narratives. A young American woman arrives in Istanbul to meet a pseudonymous online acquaintance who never arrives. Discovering a strange manuscript in her hotel room, she follows up its cryptic clues only to discover more plot-holes, and begins to wonder whether her friend was a fictional quantity all along. Meanwhile, as the War on Terror escalates, the US is dragged into an asymmetrical engagement with occultures whose principles are ancient, obscure, and saturated in oil. It is as if war itself is feeding upon the warmachines, leveling cities into the desert, seducing the aggressors into the dark heart of oil ...

Anonymous, anomalous
By KT144481
Is oil an intelligent entity? Is the platform of technology upon which our civilization functions "scientific," or is it actually a kind of voodoo, controlled and constructed behind the scenes by ancient sorcerers? Is there a bizarre and esoteric shared goal that secretly unites Western global technocapitalism and Islamic militants?

Is "pink" an important philosophical concept? And where do rats fit into all of this?

After a few chapters into Cyclonopedia, even the most skeptic reader may begin to ponder these seemingly ridiculous questions. Negarestani takes fiction and theory, genius and madness, discovery and creation and builds an entire alternate universe that is so convincing and compelling, you'll never look at the Middle East in the same way again. And the horror fan will find thrill alongside theory. Ancient Babylonian demons lurk inside video games, and an unfathomable cosmic force known simply as "the Outside" hungrily waits to devour and butcher us open. Who's next?

There are too many fresh ideas to absorb in one reading. Cyclonopedia's madness is quite rigorous, reshaping concepts from Deleuze, poromechanics and military intelligence to occult numerology. It explores little-known Indo-Iranian linguistic archeology alongside fantastic folk tales of burning rain and sentient dust devils.

Throughout the book, we are gradually acclimated to see the world in the terms of a philosophical premise that Negarestani calls the "non-metaphorical" identity of concrete materials with supposedly abstract or mental phenomena. For example, the Middle East is a sentient being; thought is dust; and war itself is a Fog, an object more tangible than any Deleuzian warmachine. Somehow, this superficially inane/insane premise takes on a plausibility within these pages that rivals everyday, common-sense perceptions of reality as well as established philosophical dogmas.

if only
By Literary Omnivore
Reza Negarestani has written a book so dense with concepts--oil as an evil entity, soldiers gone rogue ala "Apocalypse Now," disappearing authors who may or may not be terrorists, hapless tourists, French modern philosophy, ancient cults, gods who may be devils, decomposition, and sex, among hundreds of others--that it resembles nothing so much as a literary version of one of those massive desert sandstorms seen in the Middle East. It engulfs the reader, and that is both the novelty and the tragedy of the book. As another reviewer has pointed out, this is not a novel. It might be described as an experimental novel, with all the negative connotations of that phrase: when a book is presented as "an experimental novel," it often means that the writer was either too arrogant, too lazy and/or too manic to write a genuine novel. It also usually means that someone--either the editor, or perhaps the more dignified parts of the author's own personality--should have grown a backbone sufficient for telling the writer to sit back down and finish writing. Mr. Negarestani is obviously a brilliant man, but this is really only a set of notes for a novel. What a novel it could and should have been! It could so easily have been a novel--or novels--that would have been bigger than Harry Potter and Twilight combined, and intelligent, literary and challenging besides. Perhaps Mr. Negarestani chose not to write that. I can respect that, but this book unfortunately is complex to the point of being a Very Hard Slog. Is it worth reading? Yes, but it isn't fun, folks, and horror ought to be fun even when it's packed with brilliant and challenging concepts. One caveat: this is not a book for religious fundamentalists of any of the Abrahamic religions (Jews, Christian, Muslims) because the author not only makes these organized religions part of his evil mythos but also skewers their worst traits mercilessly. Update Feb. 2012: I found myself thinking about this book again recently--it's that type of book, that it will stick in your mind--and it occurred to me that what this book reminded me of was reading an encyclopedia. Entry after entry, full of information about a subject. It also occurred to me what that subject is: a mythos. That's what the author has written, a vast and brilliant mythos that, like the Cthulhu mythos, will (or should be) popular for years into the future. I can only hope that the author, or other writers, will now flesh out this mythos with numberless stories.

Complicity with Anonymous Philosophers
By G Samsa
Readers who are looking for new thoughts and concepts will find some unprecedented ideas in Cyclonopedia. For example, in one place Negarestani challenges Deleuze and Guattari's concept of war machines in relation to war. In another place he builds a different philosophy of becoming. He analyzes the politics of the Middle East through the eyes of a mad archeologist who has discovered connections between monotheism, petroleum and geology. These are just a few things that stand out for me after my first read through. I plan to go back chapter by chapter for a slower read to take in the many more themes he has presented.
I think there are a couple reasons why this book might be difficult for some readers though-

1. For readers who are expecting a novel, Cyclonopedia works like a theory book and for those who anticipate a philosophy book, it may read like a novel. My thought is that it would be best to read it as a philosophy or theory book which uses different or alternative ways for thinking. Negarestani doesn't strictly abide by philosophy or politics in order to discuss politics and philosophize about the world, but instead opts to also use a wide variety of speculative tools to make points (i.e. occult, archeology, Islamic theology and even current culture such as video game and literary studies).

2. At first, readers might feel alienated from Cyclonopedia. One of the reasons for this estrangement may be due to a lack of a parallel works to compare it with. Cyclonopedia like every other book has references and influences, but it is hard to give a coherent list of similar books. The closest and most helpful example which comes to mind is A Thousand Plateaus by Deleuze and Guattari. The influence of Deleuze is obvious throughout the book and the narrative resembles the chapter 'The Geology of Morals'. Deleuze and Guattari have incorporated experimental writing into a work of philosophy (for example, every chapter a is 'plateau' covering every topic imaginable) in much the same way Negarestani uses experimental narration and 'plotholes' throughout the book to create a work of experimental writing opposed to an academic philosophical work. While this sounds like a Deleuzian book it should be noted that Negarestani's ideas are independent of Deleuze and sometimes transcend them. Another reason for Cyclonopedia's eccentricity is that it is inherently Middle Eastern, it uses alternative resources and concepts related to different forms of thought, politics, cultures and people. In my opinion, it is what makes Negarestani's work so compelling.

Fun! Entertaining! Helpful!
By Andrea
This is the best book I've read in a long time. I enjoyed every bit of it from start to finish. First let me say, I am a huge fan of Dear Abby. Back in the day when our newspapers ran her, she was my favorite part. I was saddened when our newspapers stopped running her. Oh, I love most all columnists, but she is my favorite. Yes, I love columns, and if you love columns, then this book is for you. But we are all different, and not everybody enjoys columns, so this book would not be for those people.

This book was so entertaining, I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed it. It was mostly fun and entertaining, but there were some letters that were sad. This book is a compilation of Dear Abby's best letters.

This book is sectioned into different subjects, such as "Marriage on the Rocks", The Traumatic Teens", "Fooling Around", Paging the Aging", "The Funny Ones", "The Sad Ones", "Not Fit to Print", just to name some of them (but not all of them).

Some of the letters were fun, some were funny, some were serious, some sad, some offered very good advice from Dear Abby.

I enjoyed the whole book, and I don't know if there is another book with a compilation of Dear Abby letters, but I am going to start looking. I think Dear Abby is the best columnist in the world.

you are what you read
By JGC
This was a book that my mom read when it first came out because she was always a fan of Dear Abby and I first read this book years and years ago when I first started becoming interested in this great individual. "Dear Abby," otherwise known as Ms. Abigail Van Buren was such a fascinating person who always gave the best life-lessons. And, she truly invented the modern American advice column.

Yesterday I was reorganizing my study and I came across this book and I decided to read it again. What a great idea that was. In a way I'm thankful that most of the MSM has gone to hell in a handle basket, otherwise I never would have been reintroduced to this book.

"The Best of Dear Abby" is just what it says it is, Ms. Van Buren's very best letters, over the course of 25++ years. In it she addresses infidelity, adulatory, honesty, love, education, betrayal, loyalty, priorities and of course S-E-X. Dear Abby is witty, clever and always on the mark. But more than that she's forthright and convincing.

What did I learn from this book?

Really, I learned many important life-long lessons. First, even though this book is over 27 years old it's still relatable and that's because Dear Abby is timeless. She was the voice of reason who didn't change her values or morals with the times (times may change, but not decent people.) Dear Abby also reaffirmed my belief in the goodness of others and in the celebration of talking out and discussing your problems.

I also learned another very important lesson that Ms. Van Buren's book & advice column always resonated: DON'T ROCK THE BOAT! In other words, if it ain't broke don't fix it. And hold on to what you got because even if it isn't perfect it's better than many others! Also, if you have a secret that is better left untold then why open your mouth if it's only going to hurt others? Sometimes (not always, but sometimes) secrets (not lies) are best kept from the people who you're the closest to. I thank Ms. Van Buren for reminding me that.

As you may know, Dear Abby founded her popular column in the 50's and retired in the mid 90's. Ms. Van Buren is still very much alive, although she is living with Alzheimer's Disease (as of '06 she was in the middle stages of this illness.) Currently, the "Dear Abby" column is written by Ms. Van Buren's daughter, Ms. Jeanne Phillips who owns the rights to the "Dear Abby" legacy.

Remember, you are what you read!

Review

"Seth Gitner has a solid reputation as one of the most creative thinkers and educators in multimedia journalism. He is a driving force behind educating a great many professional and amateur visual journalists in the language of new media. There is no better guide to lead us into a multiplatform media landscape than Gitner. His text masterfully illuminates the way." ―Richard Koci Hernandez, Assistant Professor, University of California, Berkeley

"In his textbook, Gitner connects the dots to identify best practices for producing both documentary and entertainment-based web video, and then applies these skills to strategic communications. He does this all with the knowledge of someone deeply rooted in the business he is writing about, using examples from the best in the industry. Students will appreciate both Gitner’s experience and his ability to understand the need for change." ― Curt Chandler, Senior Lecturer, College of Communications, Penn State

"As Seth Gitner writes, ‘Multimedia is Storytelling, Not Technology’ and this book guides the reader through the important steps to improve their multimedia storytelling in a world where the tools are constantly changing. As news goes more mobile and storytelling in all platforms gets more interactive, the fundamentals stay the same. It is even more important to have your work standout if you want your brand or story to get noticed as people produce more and more content.

"Seth has done a fantastic job co-directing the NPPA’s Multimedia Immersion workshop, and this book allows the audience to learn many of those lessons and more without making the trip to Syracuse. Although I recommend doing both.

"The book is an excellent resource with a collection of advice and insight from award-winning journalists and legends in the business." ―Bethany Swain, Journalism Faculty, University of Maryland, former CNN photojournalist

In Europe's Space Programme - To Ariane and Beyond, author Brian Harvey begins with the fledgling European rocket effort of the 1930s and the key pioneers of the period, examining the significance of the V-2 and the technological advances represented by its development. He shows how the Russians and Americans put their captured V-2s to work, but the European countries were slower to respond. Both Britain and France developed national space programmes in the 1950s and 1960s and the early attempts at European co-operation for launcher development - ELDO and ESRO - are described. The formation of the European Space Agency and the origins of the successful Ariane launcher programme are discussed and Europe's subsequent success in the world launcher market, its cutting-edge role in space applications and European manned spaceflight, are all described in detail.

Review

From the reviews:

"This book, as was to be expected from a volume in the excellent Springer-Praxis series in astronomy and space sciences, is absolute quality… Especially if you're interested in the scientific aspects (planetary science, that is) of the Voyager missions, you won't be disappointed. It's all very well covered, extensively, with lots of interesting details and totally up-to-date (Galileo results are included in the discussions and there's a preview of the Cassini and JIMO (to Jupiter's moons) missions). The author… is definitely an excellent science writer, offering an approach that… convey(s) the sheer excitement of solar system exploration in every sentence… The book has a lot of stunning black-and-white photographs and many illustrations and diagrams, and it even features a middle section with 13 colour plates… All in all a great book. Very, very much recommended! Don't let yourself be scared off by its considerable price. It's worth every penny." from an Amazon review

"The potential reader is an amateur astronomer or a science student attracted by space science. … it should find a place on the shelves of a library for undergraduate students. … Finally, we would like to point out that this book makes an excellent case for unmanned spaced missions … ." (Fernande Grandjean and Gary J.Long, Physicalia, Vol. 57 (3), 2005)

"This book, as was to be expected from a volume in the excellent Springer-Praxis series in astronomy and space sciences, is absolute quality. … It’s all very well covered, extensively, with lots of interesting details and totally up-to-date … . Very readable also, nowhere dry or dull. … The book has a lot of stunning black-and-white photographs and many illustrations and diagrams, and it even features a middle section with 13 colour plates. … All in all a great book. Very, very much recommended!" (P. Lemmens, www.amazon.com, October, 2004)

"The book … does have a contemporary feel to it, this aspect being enhanced by the inclusion of material relating to the Galieleo mission to Jupiter and the Cassini encounter with Saturn, currently in its early days. … the authors wisely have sought not to shower their intended readership with a surfeit of detail describing the hardware, but have concentrated on the results. … The authors succeed in relaying the excitement experienced in the lead up to a Voyager flyby of a gas giant." (David Graham, Journal of the British Astronomical Association, Vol. 114 (4), 2004)

"The Voyager 1 & 2 missions launched in 1977 revolutionised our knowledge of the outer solar system. … This book summarises the missions, how they were planned and executed, what went wrong and what worked better than expected. Most of all it explains what we learnt about the planets that we never knew before. … this book is such a thoroughly good read, you should read it now. Highly recommended." (Roger Feasey, ASS - Journal of the Auckland Astronomical Society, December, 2004)

"The book is a valuable resource for those interested in the background and design of the Voyager mission. It is well illustrated throughout, despite the fact that much of the scientific discussion has been drawn from outside Voyager." (A J R Prentice, The Physicist, Vol. 41 (5), September/October, 2004)

"As the voyagers breach the boundary of the solar system, we are brought up to date with their history and achievements. This fascinating narrative, suffused with David Harland’s authoritative technological knowledge, ensures a comprehensive understanding of the missions’ genesis, execution and discoveries. … Skilfully employing information from many sources close to Voyager’s political and technical progress, Evans has provided a superbly written record of these missions, set in their (now) historical context." (Steve Ringwood, Astronomy Now, November, 2004)

"A very readable book telling the story of the exploration of the outer planets. It starts with an excellent, brief history of the legends about and the discovery of the outer planets … . is further enriched by more recent studies from the Hubble space telescope, ground-based observations, and other spacecraft missions. There is an excellent biography and about six pages of Internet references … . A great read for anyone interested in the most current information about the outer planets … . Highly recommended." (D. B. Mason, CHOICE, April, 2004)

A Good Introduction to the Spectacular Missions of the Voyager Space Probes to the Outer Solar System
By Roger D. Launius
In the last decade Springer-Praxis has published a significant number of new titles on the history of space exploration. Some are better than others, of course, and unfortunately this is not one of the more notable entries in the series. Written for the non-specialist, "NASA's Voyager Missions" offers a general introduction to what turned out to be a stunning "grand tour" of the outer gas giants of the solar system in the latter 1970s and 1980s. The basics of the story are present including the mission's origins in the 1960s, its launch in 1977, encounters with the outer planets, and the scientific windfall that resulted from the mission. This work also discusses the individuals who devoted their entire working lives to them, from the planetary work of the 1970s and 1980s to the recent Voyager Interstellar Mission.

These missions, launched from Kennedy Space Center in 1977 were intended only to image Jupiter and Saturn as they flew by, essentially a windshield tour. As the mission progressed, with the successful achievement of all its early objectives, additional flybys of the two outermost giant planets, Uranus and Neptune, proved possible--and irresistible--to mission scientists. Eventually, between them, Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 explored all the giant outer planets, 48 of their moons, and the unique systems of rings and magnetic fields those planets possess. The two Voyagers took well over 100,000 images of the outer planets, rings, and satellites, as well as millions of magnetic, chemical spectra, and radiation measurements. Without question, they returned information to Earth that revolutionized the science of planetary astronomy.

This work is suited for introductory history and science classes, but it is too unsophisticated for the serious student. It leaves unanswered a myriad of questions, and fails to explore issues of interest to historians. Unfortunately, the full history of this mission still awaits its historian. There are some other good works on the subject but those also fail to tell the story fully. Among those other books are Henry C. Dethloff and Ronald A. Schorn, "Voyager's Grand Tour: To the Outer Planets and Beyond" (Smithsonian Institution Press, 2003); Robert S. Kraemer, "Beyond the Moon: Golden Age of Planetary Exploration 1971-1978" (Smithsonian Institution Press, 2001); and David W. Swift, "Voyager Tales: Personal Views of the Grand Tour" (American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, 1997). These other works should be read along with "NASA's Voyager Missions" to gain a more rounded portrait of the Voyagers missions and their accomplishments.

Higly recommended!
By P. Lemmens
This book, as was to be expected from a volume in the excellent Springer-Praxis series in astronomy and space sciences, is absolute quality. Although I haven't read its American `competitor' Voyager's Grand Tour by Henry C. Dethloff, I cannot believe that it could be done better than this. Especially if you're interested in the scientific aspects (planetary science, that is) of the Voyager missions, you won't be disappointed. It's all very well covered, extensively, with lots of interesting details and totally up-to-date (Galileo results are included in the discussions and there's a preview of the Cassini and JIMO (to Jupiter's moons) missions). The author may not be a planetary scientist himself, he is definitely an excellent science writer, offering an approach that's technical and detailed (and `problem-conscious') enough to satisfy even professional astronomers while he's writing in such a way so as to convey the sheer excitement of solar system exploration in every sentence. Very readable also, nowhere dry or dull.
The book is more heavily focused on the scientific results of the voyager missions than it is on the technical, engineering parts of it, but that is really not a problem. Most of the on-board instrumentation of the Voyager probes is explained well enough. The book has a lot of stunning black-and-white photographs and many illustrations and diagrams, and it even features a middle section with 13 colour plates. There's a bibliography and also a huge list of useful internet resources. All in all a great book. Very, very much recommended! Don't let yourself be scared off by its considerable price. It's worth every penny.

Evans & Harland Highly Recommended
By R. Feasey
The Voyager 1 & 2 missions launched in 1977 revolutionised our knowledge of the outer solar system. This book summarises the missions, how they were planned and executed, what when wrong and what worked better than expected.

Most of all it explains what we learnt about the planets that we never knew before. Except for Galileo's recent sojourn at Jupiter, and Cassini's introduction to Saturn, the Voyagers have provided practically all our knowledge of the giant planets of the outer Solar System and their moons. What the Voyagers provided just cannot be measured from Earth based telescopes, even telescopes like the HST in Earth orbit. There is just no substitute for getting in close with an array of instruments.

The book starts with a bit of history about mankind's discovery of the nature of the solar system with a specially good section on the discovery of the new planets Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. The historical encounters of John Adams (who was one of two who predicted the position of the as yet undiscovered Neptune) with George Airy, the Astronomer Royal, who couldn't be bothered looking, were particularly of interest.

The exploration program was initially planned as a 'Grand Tour' with two launches to Jupiter, Saturn then Pluto followed by two launches to Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune. However funding these missions was competing with the development of the Space Shuttle, and the inevitable happened, budget cuts. Even with the reduction in funds, the opportunity could still not be missed, as the optimal alignment of the planets for taking advantage of such a progressive gravitational slingshot would not reoccur until the twenty second century, the 'chance of three lifetimes' for sure. A reduced budget mission was eventually given approval.

Of surprise to this reader was that the final Voyager missions (the name was not chosen until shortly before launch) were initially planned as Jupiter plus Saturn missions only, due of course to funding restrictions. The final configuration of the space craft was very different from those of the earlier 'Grand Tour' plans which had included the drop off of a probe into the atmosphere of Jupiter, finally executed by Galileo decades later. The final Voyagers were closely related to the successful Mariner series.

While some interesting background detail is provided on the spacecraft themselves, their power, computer and instrumentation systems, and the intensity of the mission planning debates at the time of each encounter, the planets of course are the stars of the book. Evans & Harland spend over 50 pages discussing the discoveries at Jupiter, 40 pages on Saturn and its rings, and almost 30 pages each on Uranus and Neptune and their unusual collection of moons.

With Jupiter, both the Voyager's discoveries and the more recent additions to our knowledge from Galileo are covered. Cassini of course is in the process of re-writing the history of our knowledge of Saturn and its environs. But don't let that disturb you. Cassini will take at least four years to make its discoveries, and this book is such a thoroughly good read, you should read it now. Highly recommended.

Mountain Man Hero
By Kindle Customer
This is the first book I have read by this author. I fell in love with the hero, MacGregor, mountain man, rough & tough with a heart of gold, everyone's dream hero. Now, Regina is another story, I had a hard time taking to her character. I kept wanting to slap her and send her back to England. This is a story of a mountain man coming to the rescue of a damsel in distress. They meet up with all sorts of trials along the way. It is a wonderful exciting story, in spite of Regina, couldn't put it down.

I read the printed version
By Nih
This is a really great book!! A gem I found at an used books store.

At first I was getting a bit mad at the hero, MacGregor, and was siding with Regina, but then we got to know his past a bit better and saw repeatedly how good he was, how gently he acted with his scrap of a baby and with her... mwell, my heart was completely lost to the man.

The plot was really interesting, with great characters appearing all the time, hot scenes between the main characters and there was also real development and growth from both of them.

I liked reading about the Indians at the time, how they suffered and fought. The author is very talented, indeed. Great descriptions.

At I was getting to the end of the book, Regina (or Violet) was starting to annoy me quite a bit, but I got her point of view, and she ended up redeeming herself... the end was really sweet.

I wish I could have Pierre and/or MacGregor for myself. I'll be reading it again soon. ;)

A quick, interesting, romantic reading.
