A must have desk reference for chemists and those handling chemicals

The Merck Index is a handy desk reference. It lists thousands of substances, especially those in commerce, and provides a brief article on each. Information includes the chemical formula, properties, uses, toxicity data, and often references to how made. In addition to chemicals and drugs, natural products like olive oil are described. The book is well indexed including common names and brand names. A 240-page appendix has numerous useful tables including references to named organic reactions, prescription notations, temperature conversion charts, metric unit conversions, etc.

This is the first choice reference volume used by most chemists.

Beautiful and straight to the point!

The reviews for these cards are all spot on, but I thought I might add something:

The cards are one sided (the back of every card is the same bird image that graces the cover of the box). The side with the "message" is simple- a few words such as "Lend a Hand", "Accept Love", "Look Forward", "Have Fun", and even "Get over yourself" with a gorgeous image (these cards are SO lovely!) that illustrates the idea. No other words- no explanations, no quotes.

The little book (which is the size of a gift book- very generous) that comes with the cards goes into each card with more depth, but the cards themselves are as simple as can be. Personally, I love this because it means I can read into the card as I need to. But I know some people prefer double-sided cards, or cards that have a little bit of information on the backs sharing insight to their meaning. The illustrations are really outstanding.

I just can't say enough about this deck. It's gorgeous, bright, illuminating, straight forward, and so insightful. The cards themselves are thick, glossy 5" x 3.5 " and feel great in the hand. I "collect" decks, especially the one Hay House puts out (I especially love Power Thought Cards (Beautiful Card Deck) and Wisdom Cards), and this has to be my favorite so far. Beautiful, insightful, doesn't lean in any "spiritual" direction or philosophy. You don't need to be familiar with Sonia Choquette's writing or life approach to be able to fully use these cards.

These cards are perfect for everyone, whether you need just a quick answer to a dilemma, need a creative "push", need some insight into a situation, or just an idea to meditate and focus on. If you want to delve deeper into the meanings of the cards, you can, but if you just want a simple "spark", this is your deck. I'm truly in love with these cards.

Simple maybe, beautiful absolutely!

I got these cards yesterday. I've had many different kinds of oracle cards but these are totally different. As the title says they are simple, clearcut, and wonderfully colorful cards. The colors please the eyes and feel so positive to hold and to use! I was really impressed with the book and the written meanings of each of the cards! I feel like Sonia really meditated and planned each card lovingly and honestly. These are my new favorites!!!

Perfect way to start the day

A friend of mine gifted me with these cards and they have changed my days in great ways. I have since bought 10 or more decks to give to friends of mine.

I am a friend of Tarot cards as well - but these cards are more like Spirit Cards - the message they give lets you know how to check your ego at the door, get it out of your way and get to living life in a real way.

I highly recommend.

Vargas Llosa demuestra en esta novela que es un gran arquitecto de la literatura y un eficaz descriptor de la compleja sociedad peruana y latinoamericana. La novela contiene diferentes narradores e historias entrelazadas que tienen como eje principal la vida de un grupo de estudiantes de un colegio militar de Lima. Las historias del Poeta (proveniente de una familia con comodidad econ�mica), el Jaguar (producto de la violencia y pobreza de su pasado) y el Esclavo (incapaz de enfrentar el ambiente violento) nos muestran las grandes desigualdades y conflictos de la sociedad peruana. La convivencia dram�tica de estos personajes en el colegio militar es un ejemplo de las dificultades de interrelaci�n que se dan en la sociedad. He le�do casi todos los libros de Vargas Llosa y definitivamente La Ciudad y los Perros junto con Conversaci�n en la Catedral son los mejores.

El microcosmos lime�o de un gran escritor

"La ciudad y los Perros" es la primera novela de MVLL, con la cual ganar�a, en 1964, el premio Biblioteca Breve otorgado por Seix Barral. La publicaci�n del libro provoc� reacciones enardecidas en la c�pula militar peruana, quienes en un acto de represalia hicieron una fogata con todas las primeras ediciones que llegaron a sus manos. Esta fue la primera se�al que indicaba el nacimiento de un nuevo escritor.
La historia se desenvuelve dentro de un colegio militarizado (el Leoncio Prado, el cual a�n se encuentra en funcionamiento) y narra de manera cruda las vicisitudes de un grupo de adolescentes que llegaron a ese colegio por diversos motivos. Unos para reformarse y convertirse en hombres de bien, y otros para hacerse "machos". En este micro-cosmos, MVLL nos revela los secretos mejor guardados de la sociedad lime�a, sus vicios: el racismo (peculiar en un pa�s pluri-cultural), las diferencias sociales (los burgueses blanquecinos viven en San Isidro, y los pobres acholados en Lince), el autoritarismo militar (los cadetes y los perros), la corrupci�n (la venta ilegal de pisco y cigarrillos a cambio de algunos favores, o dinero adicional), el servilismo militar ("Gamboa esa denuncia fregar� tu ascenso") y el chantaje ("Cadete Fern�ndez, si usted promete no volver hablar del tema yo olvidar� que usted escribi� estas historietas inmorales"). Y aunque algunos personajes tratan de mostrar el lado bueno de la vida militar (Gamboa y su tozudez por cumplir su deber al pie de la letra, a pesar que eso podr�a perjudicar su futuro; el C�rculo y su lealtad enfermiza, aunque esta s�lo le sirva para cometer actos ilegales; la amistad entre el Poeta y el Esclavo, aunque sea considerada como una mariconada por sus compa�eros de clases) es claro que el mundo que se pretende mostrar es el negativo, en el cual prevalecen las taras sociales. No olvidemos que MVLL estudi� en el colegio que hace referencia en este libro, y quiz�s haya sido testigo presencial de aquellos excesos.
Sin embargo, lo magistral de esta novela no radica precisamente en el tema -este es s�lo un medio a trav�s del cual el escritor logra su objetivo: escribir -, sino m�s bien en el estilo que emplea el escritor. Un vocabulario enriquecedor, empleando incluso jergas peruanas que revelan por s� mismos su significado; una descripci�n precisa de los personajes y ambientes, sin caer en el uso excesivo de esta t�cnica que podr�a llevar al lector al tedio somn�fero; y una magn�fica conexi�n entre sus historias.
Sin atenuantes, un cl�sico de la Literatura Latinoamericana.

muy bueno, aunque no el mejor de sus libros, esas historias sobre colegios militares tienen su publico, y puede ser que no sea muy amante de esas lecturas, pero hay que darle sus meritos, el usa el estilo de contar las cosas comenzando desde la mitad de las mismas, yendo al principio y finalizando. no se la recomiendo a nadie como primera lectura de vargas llosa, es mejor comenzar por la casa verde, mas intensa, mas madura narrataivamente hablando,pero ustedes lo leen y despues deciden.

An Exemplar of Chess Opening Books

Rizzitano's "How to Beat 1 d4" is an example of how opening repetoire books should be written. The reader can tell how meticulously the author approached this work- all the relevant analysis, along with many suggested improvements from the author himself. The book presents the Queen's Gambit Accepted as the centerpiece of the repetoire, and also offers lines against all of White's second-move alternatives. A welcome bonus is analysis of 3 e3 e5 in the QGA, which allows Black to play alternatives such as 4...Bg4 in the main line after 3 Nf3 Nf6 4 e3. A great work.

Won my first two QGA games after reading this book

I'm an ICCF Master Class player and I recently bought Rizzitano's book "How to beat 1.d4". I ever had problem with black vs 1.d4 and I read with great interest Rizzitano's book. The book was clear, extremely interesting, up to date, with all strategic ideas behind the opening well analysed and explained.

I recently tried the QGA in an ICCF Master Class tournament (EM-M-307) and the result was : +2 =0 -0 that is 100% for the first 2 QGA I ever played!!!!

Compliments to the author: the good result I get in the tournament is fully due to his book!!!

Great Book

This is an amazing book, extremely detailed and thorough. It is a totally complete repertoire against 1.d4. I don't know what the last reviewer is talking about. Contrarily, this one of the most complete and thorough opening repertoire books I've ever seen.

This is your road map when white plays 1.d4. Keep in mind that it's a repertoire book, not an instructional manual on how to play every single move in every single position. (But it comes close!) One thing the book lacks is an "Illustrative Games" section. If this is your only reference, then you will need to either find a supplemental book, well annotated QGA games, or a coach to help you work through the positions once the analysis stops.

The good news is that he basically quotes his sources on every book, game fragment, and annotator. If you want to see more, just pull the game up on your computer and have at it. This is a window into a titled player's opening preparation, so be prepared to do some work to digest the material.

I think this is good for players rated 1800+, because it can be an overwhelming amount of material at some points. It is definitely *not* the "Easy Guide" to the QGA.

I am looking forward to seeing more from the meticulously thorough Rizzitano.
