An Utterly Enjoyable Romp
By Marta Cheng
Set in seventeenth century Transylvania, The Fourth Virgin is a historical romance somewhat reminiscent of the animated movie, Beauty and the Beast. Every 25 years, an age-old pact between the town of Allershausen and the Lords of Wolfensburg is honored when the town sacrifices one of its young virgins to the Wolf’s Men in order to keep the town safe and prosperous. This year, the Wolf’s Men have requested three virgins rather than one but thanks to a lack of qualified contenders for the dubious distinction, the town sends the Wolf’s Men three prostitutes instead. Their deceit is quickly discovered when the Wolf’s Men disrupt the wedding of Viola Brugger’s beloved sister, Samara, demanding Samara as a replacement. Viola, crippled and unwanted by her father and stepmother, offers herself in her sister’s place. She is quickly whisked away to the White Wolf’s castle. Resigned to her fate, Viola is somewhat surprised and taken aback by the sumptuous surroundings and clothing she is given once she arrives at the castle. Even more surpising is the enigmatic Kyrian Lupanescu himself, White Wolf and clearly lord of his domain. Despite her crippling deformity, Kyrian is intrigued by Viola’s beauty and intelligence whereas Viola is equally intrigued by the man behind the leather masks…However, intrigue is not enough if the curse on Kyrian’s family is to be broken once and for all.

The author spins an interesting, if somewhat predictable tale of erotic romance set amid a seventeenth century backdrop that will have readers lusting for the wanton sexuality of Charon’s male protagonist. His assortment of leather masks and his animal desires, so recklessly taken, will have female readers with their knickers in a knot as they close their eyes and let their fertile imaginations do the rest. There is plenty of sexual tension throughout the story, helped in some part by the ethereal atmosphere that Charon so adeptly creates. The Fourth Virgin is an utterly enjoyable romp!

Historical Romance based on Myths and Legends of Medieval Eastern Europe
By Scarlett Jensen
This story tells of a romance, based on the myths and legends of medieval Eastern Europe. It starts out in Allershausen founded in Transylvania many generations ago.
With Viola’s birth, her father, Franz Brugger believed that he had gone against God and the Christian commandments when he had given in to his carnal desire and devoted himself to a stranger, a pagan. Her death was the punishment for this sacrilegious act, and that Viola, the child she had given birth to would be a constant reminder of his transgression. The pastor that Franz Brugger confided in, held that to attain divine forgiveness, Brugger would have to vow to provide for the demands of the Wolf’s Men.
The Wolf’s Men demanded three virgins be sacrificed as part of the past.
That agreement has always been contrary to decency and morality. Man is a divine creature. To sacrifice a young, innocent girl for own safety and for a handful of silver, make you an ally of these devils! Now they are demanding more and more. Time had come to end this pact. What happens to the girls that are sent to Wolfensburg was still a secret. As first step in breaking the pact, the community sent the Wolf’s Men three prostitutes.
A loud commotion, invaders arrived in Allershausen. The Wolf’s Men pulled out their pistols from their belts and aimed. They dominated with their presence. Despite their superior numbers, the Allershauseners did not dare to attack. “You betrayed us,” said the leader “You broke the contract.”
“If anyone has broken the pact, then it is you, Wolf’s Men! We are obligated to surrender one virgin to you. But you demanded three...We wanted to protect our womenfolk from your excessive demands. Even if we wanted to, there are not three virgins in Allershausen who are older than fourteen.
Viola was not able to save herself from a gruesome fate. She said: there is one only one virgin and “that virgin is me.” If she could save the lives of the Allershauseners with her sacrifice; it was a small price to pay. Then her family would get a clump of silver every year so that she, the unloved daughter, may perhaps eventually even buy her father’s benevolence. She also wondered whether this ungodly act had taken place as punishment for fraud, or whether any woman who went with the Wolf’s Men was condemned to a cruel death?
Viola’s ancestors had come from the Empire to Transylvania six generations ago, as had most Allershauseners. They had kept a number of their customs and conventions of origin, but also intertwined those with the myths of their acquired region. Viola knew the legends of the vampires and werewolves, who raided the villages in search of blood at night.
A creature stood opposite Viola when she arrived at Wolf’s castle. His head was covered by a black leather mask with a wolf’s snout and small pointed ears. Silver studs and fittings contoured the animalistic traits and brought them to life in a ghostly manner. The devil had sent him, Kyrian, a woman who was everything he had always dreamed of, and at the same time had made sure that she could feel nothing but fear and disgust, when she would learned the truth about him.
No one, except a few of his men, had seen his face. He did not want a woman who was petrified when he touched her. He was to make her understand his feelings. “Viola, it was never my intention to hurt or frighten you. The reasons why you’re here, why the Wolf’s Men made this pact years ago, which has influenced your life so severely, does not bode well with me either. I assure you that there is no reason for fear and despair.” When she started to undo the lace of the bodice, he stopped at the door without turning around and said, “I alone decide what I do and what I don’t do! No pact and no fearful eyes and no malicious gossip from whores will influence my decision.”
What Kyrian did not know, was that he had not even touched Viola, but transformed her into a whimpering, begging bundle of consenting flesh with just the power of his words. Can she make him dependent on her? He needed a woman who knew his passion, his insistent desire and who is excited by it.
Marie one of the three prostitutes implored Kyrian: “Send the girl away! We were made for each other.” How will things continue? Was he going to kill the three of them, so that he can live happily with the fourth virgin until the end of his days?
Wolfensburg felt like being a cursed place ruled by evil and a situation so unreal to Viola, a man without a face, a dark castle, secrets and gossip everywhere, but nothing tangible. She felt as if she were living in a dream and could not wake up, no matter how hard she tried. The author succeeded in creating an ominous atmosphere:
According to legend, the first ’Blood Wolf’ and his pack sent terror across the country. Within hours they had raped and killed all the women and young girls. The male children’s tongues were cut out and they were made to witness the heinous crimes. When they came across the village elder, the woman spoke a curse with her last breath: No one in that family should ever see the light of the sun. They should be condemned to a life of eternal darkness.” Wolf-Dietrich von Lupariat embarked on a journey to Venice a few days later, to return to Dessau, where his family home was situated. During the trip his eyesight deteriorated and when he arrived in Dessau, he was blind. His wife bore him three sons : all were born without eyes and only survived a few days. Dread rose in Viola. She looked for hope in her despair. Can the curse be broken?
Only the male offspring are affected by the curse. Once a girl is born, the chain is broken. That means Viola was there to give birth to a daughter to break the curse. Why a virgin? And why did Kyrian want three virgins instead of one, as the pact states?
The semen of the White Wolf does not easily plant itself. The less unused the soil, in which it is to be planted , the greater the chances of obtaining the desired result. Since they cannot move freely, an ancestor made the pact with Allershausen. Each generation of White Wolves received a virgin in exchange for security and silver. Three virgins tripled the chance of breaking the curse.
They are bound together because fate wants it that way − by a curse and a pact. Viola should have Kyrian’s child. In spite of fate Kyrian said: “I want you to burn for me like I burn for you. Limbs like an elf. Flaming hair. A mouth that Aphrodite would envy you.” He stroked Viola’s cheek with the flower, her chin, downwards between her breasts. The petals detached themselves from the calyx and left a shimmering, fragrant trail on her body. Overpowering her.
In a surreal situation Viola felt as if they were at the centre of a legend or a dream. She watched that incredible scene completely stunned: “ A wild beast that was snuggling with Kyrian as if it were a trained pet! And countless other wild beasts were sleepily stretched out in the grass. Viola felt a mixture of emotion and triumph for having won the trust of this untamed creature. Viola tickled the neck of the wolf, which had closed its eyes in the meantime. Its fur felt soft and warm and shone like silver in the moonlight. “You aren’t afraid of them, are you?” Kyrian asked. Viola felt safe and loved by a man she trusted.
Was the mask he wore, just a coincidence? Viola did not want to think about how he must have felt growing up without a proper identity, not seeing more of himself. His parents wanted to protect him. They didn’t want him to be aware of the full extent of his disfigurement, she thought.
His fingers further fuelling the flame in her lap until she thought she had burst into a shower of shooting stars. He raised his arm and began to lick the back of his hand like a cat would its paw. She wondered why she neither felt disgust nor horror, but rather an almost magical fascination. For years no one had bothered about her as she was a cripple.
There are secrets in Wolf’s castle. Viola can never say one word about the happenings, otherwise, her soul shall fall prey to eternal damnation. She would do everything to help Kyrian lift the curse off his family. He had been prepared for every possible reaction from her side, repulsion, disgust, fear but he had not remotely expected that she could like what she saw. “I want to be with you because you’re everything that I’ve ever dreamed of...I want to serve you with my body and my heart, and if I still have a soul, then it is yours, Viola! I love you. I know that you didn’t come here voluntarily, but I want you to stay here voluntarily. I don’t want you fear my touch, but that you long for it.”
As a virgin of Allershausen, who had been sent by the citizens to comply with the pact of the White Wolf had to leave everything behind what she held near and dear. One of them would perhaps be willing to stay with him if she had the opportunity to decide freely. There need to be no fear as Kyrian had not killed anyone before. He was not a monster and had to continue to develop the legend, the myth of Wolfsburg and its inhabitants. What about the mask? Every rumour about what the White Wolf looked like, weaved a piece of the legend. Furthermore, it is his personal protection, his last possibility to retreat. Only those people whom he completely trusted knew what his face looks like. ”Your trust honours me,” he said to Viola. She promised never to abuse it.
He wishes to spend his life with her, he appreciated the way in which Viola took care of the castle and its inhabitants. She was the good spirit hovering over everything.
“She is our light,” Viola said softly. Kyrian nodded. “Our hope incarnate.” She shall be called Luzia Esperanza Lupanescu. Can the curse be broken ?

A good story well told.

Love it!
By Renee Spicuzza
I absolutely loved Daria Charon’s, “The Fourth Virgin: Historical Romance,” because of its hold on the society during that time period. The novel takes place in seventeenth century Transylvania, but it follows a tradition that every 25 years, a young virgin is sacrificed. In a turn of events, a deformed girl by the name of Viola ends up being given to leader of the Wolf’s Men, Kyrian, who fits a typical male figurehead, strong and in charge. I was reminded a bit of the traditional beauty and the beast storyline and so the story is a bit predictable. However, the characters make it unique because they have their own issues that are different from past stories I have read and neither Viola or Kyrian give up on each other, even when faced with issues regarding their survival from the curse. I truly enjoyed this novel and I can’t wait to see future stories from Charon!
