Another Ancient Archie

Archie before he was homogenized

Hi:
I've purchased all of the Dark Horse books except volume one, waiting for the price to go down a bit. The Dark Horse Archie Archives series showcases the Archie characters when they were a work in progress.
Archie looks more like Alfred E. Neuman with pimples than the Archie of today.
Jughead is often modeled on Leo Gorcey of the Dead End Kids, see Angels with Dirty Faces and is portrayed as taller, shorter, thinner or fatter, a character often complaining about being dragged into Archie's schemes.
Reggie is an ever changing character often not recognizable from the Reggie of the past 50 years.
Betty and Veronica look like glamorous movie stars and their appearance was often different in the same issue. They had a fashion section featuring dress designs--you could buy an actual dress pattern for a quarter.
The cover features Reggie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead in circled 50's characters, clearly recognizable but you won't find them as fixed characters in these books. The Dark Horse series is a lot of fun.
One warning: Occasionally in some of the early Pep and Archie comics there are frames here and there that pointlessly insert African Americans as butt-of-the-joke Minstrel caricatures. It's just awful and makes you cringe. Fortunately there are few instances.
Please remember that Dark Horse is reprinting Archie comics as they appeared. Unfortunately early Archie comics have an element of our highly racist past.
Again, I would highly recommend the whole series. Volume four is one of my favorites.
