So what do you do? Chloe decides they should get attention another way. She and Finn will stage her own disappearance - and then Finn will be the only who finds and saves her. What college wouldn't want them after that kind of attention? It seems like a good plan -- until things start going very wrong.

From School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up–Looking for a way to differentiate themselves from all the other great students applying to prestigious universities, Finn and Chloe fake the latter's disappearance in order to attract attention. Chloe conceived this plan after following the media frenzy over an abducted teen's return to her family, sure that the now-famous Margaret Cook will be accepted to any college. Though plagued with doubts, Finn keeps a straight face while lying to everyone, occasionally sneaking out to check on Chloe, who is hiding in her vacationing grandmother's basement. Despite having discussed every extenuating circumstance imaginable, the girls are stunned when police arrest Chloe's friend Dean for her murder, a crime only they know he did not commit. They stage her return from her “kidnapping” with surprisingly few complications, but things are never the same between the two best friends. Describing events from Finn's first-person perspective, Corrigan paints a complex portrait both of a family in grief and the emotions involved in deception. She deftly captures the way one mistake can lead to others, snowballing into a situation that seems insurmountable. Unfortunately, the story's premise is a bit hard to swallow. With modern society offering so many other routes to becoming a celebrity, it's hard to believe the teens would take this one. Readers who can get past that will find this well-paced, mature, psychological tale is impossible to put down.Jennifer Barnes, formerly at Homewood Library, IL

Desperate to improve their visibility to colleges, two girls hatch a scheme to make them stand out from the crowd. The plan is simple; its execution, less so. Chloe would take off on her horse, which would then return home without her, signaling her disappearance. Meanwhile, Finn, her best friend, would hide Chloe in a basement, see that she had food, and then “discover” Chloe as she stumbled out of the woods 11 days later. The girls had counted on the psychological challenges of Chloe’s loneliness and Finn’s lies. What they hadn’t anticipated are the plans’ unexpected repercussions, which result in the destruction of another life and the compromising of their souls. Corrigan has crafted a complex, heart-wrenchingly plausible YA thriller. Peopled with multifaceted teen and adult characters, the story flows from secrets to lies, from a few harsh words to terrible accusations, and from supreme innocence to soul-sucking guilt. A fascinating character study of individuals and an entire town, this tension-filled story will entice readers with a single booktalk. Grades 7-10. --Frances Bradburn

A stellar page turner, coming of age story and portrait of young women.
By Joshua R. Powell
I saw this book had been given special mention so I figured I'd check it out.

Great Idea!

Ms. Corrigan's book is not only a terrific little potboiler about two high school girls who get in way over their head as a stunt intended to make them national celebrities spins beyond their control, it's also a very tender portrait of how friendships at that age, which feel eternal and invulnerable, begin to fray and dissolve.

In fact, though I picked it up as a little suspense read for the beach it's savvy depiction of the friendship between Finn and Chloe is what I left with. Without being too pushy about it, Ms Corrigan, has shown the very real way that class, background and expectations play out in adolescence and in friendship.

It's a great read. I sat glued to it for a weekend, finishing it late sunday afternoon, which gave me just enough time to think about it on the train ride home.

Eireann doesn't disappoints.

I truly believe that Eireann Corrigan is one of the greatest YA writers out there. And here she dazzles once again with exquisite writing and excruciating detail. The plot moves slowly, which may be a turn off to some readers, but it does a wonderful job at really letting the consequences of Chloe and Finn's actions sink in. As a poets do, here in her prose Eireann's writing not only tells a story, but forces the reader into it to feel every painful step after painful step.

Great read for all ages!
By Kim Shaffer
This was a terrific read. Despite it being a YA book, I truly enjoyed it. A number of adults who were over for dinner wanted to borrow the book and will likely go out and buy it. It is a compelling page turner that keeps you engaged. I had trouble putting it down, despite two little ones running around!
