Chicanas/os are part of the youngest, largest, and fastest growing racial/ethnic 'minority' population in the United States, yet at every schooling level, they suffer the lowest educational outcomes of any racial/ethnic group. Using a 'counterstorytelling' methodology, Tara Yosso debunks racialized myths that blame the victims for these unequal educational outcomes and redirects our focus toward historical patterns of institutional neglect. She artfully interweaves empirical data and theoretical arguments with engaging narratives that expose and analyse racism as it functions to limit access and opportunity for Chicana/o students. By humanising the need to transform our educational system, Yosso offers an accessible tool for teaching and learning about the problems and possibilities present along the Chicano/a educational pipeline.

COUNTERSTORIES IN EDUCATION- MINORITY DEPARTURES

This book uses a stimulating suite of critical race counterstorytelling centred on Chicana/Chicano students, teachers and community.It reveals massive deficiency in appropriate USA education and investment but it demonstrates the wealth of minority culture and interest in education.This innovative approach [at least to many mainstream researchers' published work]uses critical race theory to give stories from the educational pipeline from elementary school to graduate school. And I was absorbed by all of them. As well we have the latest demographic research on the status of Chicana/Chicano minority student education.We see that in the USA the group with the lowest educational outcomes is the fastest growing racial/ethnic minority population- this should be enough to drive further investment in educational reform in a social future where no educational reform is not an option for a sustainable society. While there is much work to do, we are shown by Yosso how barriers in education can be challenged and how, in her words, counterstories can build community, challenge perceived wisdoms, reveal silent voices, nurture community wealth and transform education. Additionally there is a wealth of diverse reference material of considerable interest to a range of researchers. Counterstory construction gives us a wealth of lived experience and thus personalises educational experience in a way which is attractive and mesmerising. The research data as well as counterstory format allows us to view our teaching and learning reality, and not just the same old majoritarian view of learning. Tara Yosso's research is a vital addition to public policy reform, to undergraduate education courses and to researchers working to impact on recruitment and retention in secondary and higher education. It also paves the way for curriculum reform.

Not perfect, but an engaging presentation of important topics

This text presents voices we don't often hear in discussions of education. The narratives are well-founded in strong research and relevant literature. The style weaves typical academic discourse with student-focused details from chicana/chicano life. Some ideas may be challenging, but in general the content is easy to read through and relatively entertaining.
