From Uyless Black: Some ten years after writing technical books and receiving reviews on them, I've decided to respond to the input from readers. I should have done so sooner, but here it is now. You will now see this note placed on the comments for each book that is listed on this site, so don't bother re-reading. The note is the same for all the technical books.

The "pros" comments have dealt mainly with an easy to understand format. The "cons" comments have focused on the books (a) not being suited for college classes, (b) too many typos, and (c) mere recitations of ITU and Internet standards. There are other positive and negative comments, but these four points stand out.

The books were intended to be general references; general in relation to the topic itself. They were designed specifically to provide a relatively non-technical overview of ITU and Internet standards. They were used mostly by professionals who had degrees, and needed to (quickly) come to a general understanding of a set of standards. Afterwards, the readers could then go into the details of the standards themselves. Thus, my task was to distill many pages of highly detailed specifications into a few pages of summaries. One of the principal criticisms of the books was the very reason they were written.

I fault myself and my three publishers for not catching the typos, of which there are just too many. I was being asked by my publishers and my clients to hurry-up and get the next summary text out the door, as the clients' projects were beginning. That is why I wrote so many books in a short time. The technologies were coming out in rapid succession, and people did not have the time to read perhaps thousands of pages of standards. I did not take sufficient time to proof. But my publishers, sometimes with two to three proof readers---and at least one technical expert---reading a manuscript also dropped the ball.
I think my books provided a valuable service to my readers. My clients used them extensively, and I believe I was able to "short-cut" them to later read the details more efficiently. Nonetheless, in hindsight the books were insufficiently edited and written with too much haste.

I've been quite surprised that these books are still being sold. Not because they do not have merit, but that they are out-dated. The market for them does not come from the publishers, but from being on the used book market. My recommendation to you is not to buy technical books that are (sometimes) over ten years old.

One last point, which I hope you find humorous, perhaps ironic. Some readers compared some of my work unfavorably to an esteemed writer and lecturer. I read some his books. One contained a figure what was quite similar to a figure in one of my books; so similar in fact, that it included an error I had made in the figure. He did not source my figure, but led the reader to think it was his own creation----and his own error!

UNMATCHED POWER AND HONESTY

This is a powerful, beautifully honest book about gambling against the house and almost losing everything, including family, love and lots of money. If you go to casinos, play the daily numbers, buy scratch tickets, read this book about a young man who played the game and got hooked.
Gambling is a spreading, dangerous addiction. There is that dark but true joke that we took the land from various Native American tribes, but now those tribes, through their casinos, are taking the land back one house at a time.

I cannot recall reading a stronger, more honest and self-revealing book. Mr. Turbessi is a very courageous, self-aware
writer. Lots of angst and passion here about sinking into the mire of gambling. All the traits are visible: the self-deceit, the lies and secrecy, the craziness that if you lose and bet more, eventually you'll win it all back.
Mr. Turbassi throws money away on poker. He thinks he can read the other players when he can't even read himself. It's a tough book but it has to be. Gambling swallowed Joe Turbessi's life for years. And he didn't overcome gambling's devouring power. Mr. Turbessi knows there is no cure, just inner strength and self awareness, because the gambling demons are always inside, just waiting. This is a great book. I've read it three times. Mr. Turbessi can write with strong and clear observations. He's seen an unmatched deuce and a seven, but this time he won't bet on it. Do you know someone who is addicted to gambling? This is the book to read.

Eye-Opening!

When I was recommended to read "Into the Muck: How poker changed my life" I wasn't sure how well I could connect to a book about poker, something I've never really had a huge interest in. However, from the very beginning of the story I could immediately tell that this was not a book about poker at all. Yes, Joe in the novel did play poker and talked about his experience with poker, but it wasn't about poker (if you know what I mean). You could swap in many topics to take place of "poker." This was an EYE-OPENING story of his realization of his problem and a problem facing many people in the world today. The struggles he had with his addiction can relate to any reader. The honesty of this book was the part that really got me. It was as if I stole someone's journal or diary and was reading it as a guilty pleasure. Joe reveals more about himself, to the whole world, than many could have the courage to do with a close friend. Reading this transformation of a troubled young man from an addict to someone who now advocates against it is 100% inspiring. This book has something to teach ANYONE. TRULY INSPIRATIONAL!

Not much depth, but a pretty honest look into the perils of addiction

If you want an eloquent expose' on the world of gambling addiction, this is not the book. However, if you are a gambler (specifically poker) that is suffering, the book is a pretty straight-up look on the sickness and false world ESPN and the poker world pushes on us. Turbessi's anger and immaturity dance frantically across the page, despite the uneven writing.

Good reading for enthousiasts

Interesting for me (I'm an Electronics and Computers engineer, and a Simmer on high-end planes, cockpit builder). It was always interesting for me what is "behind the scenes", as well as how it was developing from the past to present days. Note to other reviews: in Kindle edition, the Table of Contents is integrated into the Menu (electronic TOC). The pictures are in color, double-tap a picture to see the high-resolution version (if available).

An absolute classic for 737 lovers! But I really don't understand why the kindle version doesn't have a table of contents, not even a static one! That makes reading much more difficult. But I can tolerate that for such a great book.

I am an Aviation nut and try to collect as much information as possible on aircrafts. I usually do Flight simming on Classic and Modern Jetliners and try to be as accurate as possible to the real world. This development history of the "Pilots" plane and one of the best selling commercial aircrafts of all time, the 737 is well researched and covers all the systems on this great little Jet. The author has split the 737's history from a technical side into broadly three categories:

1. The originals (-100/200/200Adv)
2. The classics(-300/400/500)
3. The NG(-/600/700/800)
plus some recent developments like freight/research conversions as well as a little on the MAX

He covers all the systems of this bird as would usually be found in the FCOMS, starting from Air-conditioning, covering Auto Flight, APU, Electrical, Hydraulics, Fuel, FMC, Flight Controls etc. the descriptions are brief but are in sufficient detail and covers little known facts and insights. It was hugely enjoyable for an Aviation Fan like me. It would be of great use to 737 Pilots as well. That being said, This does not replace the official FCOMS of the various types and only serves as a complement

Great book

This is a wonderful book. The glossary and table of all the CD##s are worth the price. The text splits the difference between an engaging overview like "How the Immune System Works" and a definitive reference like Janeway. I found this book to be very helpful in medical school. For someone with little to no background in immunology interested in getting a reasonable med student introduction I'd say start by reading "How the Immune System Works" then move onto "Basic Immunology" to get the details.

Excellent graphics to understand visually

This book is very concise and has excellent pictures and tables to depict the most pertinent information about Immunology. The graphics and tables are all colorful and easy to understand. That said, the book is not as detailed as some other books out there, but for my course I took in pharmacy school, it was good enough. Where it lacked in detail I picked up in the lecture. This book is excellent for understanding immunology, especially if it's your first time ever taking immunology.

About the Author
Dr. Roxanne Brant (1943 –1986), founder of the Northern Florida Christian Center in O'Brien, FL, conducted miracle services and crusades throughout the United States, Canada, and other parts of the world. She studied at Harvard Divinity School, Boston University School of Theology, and Gordon Divinity, earning B.A., M. Div., Th.D, and D.D. degrees. Dr. Brant died in 1986, leaving a ministry that continues to carry on her work in spreading the Gospel message of God's love and healing through Christ.

I ordered this book for my church's Ladies Group. Since it was out of print, I knew that the best place to order it would be at Amazon.com and I was not disappointed!

I have been blessed, inspired and challenged by this book because it shares the heart of Roxanne Brant's all too brief ministry, that if we, as Christians, put Him and our ministry to Him first that the Church would be consumed with a holy zeal and passion to do His will at this hour.

as all good writing should be

"There remains the mystery of how the pupil devours
so much bastard beauty."

This one line from the poem "The Rewilding" captures my own response to this marvelously rich collection of poems.

Traversing the country of the heart as well as the actual landscapes of Kentucky and New York (where the poet divides her time), we as readers are treated as fellow travelers...privileged to have Ada Limon as our generous guide to striking emotional landscapes, audacious metaphors, and heart-wise reflections of place and home and homelessness.

The poet manages to weave narrative with nature, humor with pathos, the contemporary with the timeless echo of transcendent desire........so much bastard beauty indeed. And how she does it all is blessed mystery, as all good writing should be.

of death, the poverty of place, of skin
and surface. See how the snake is cut
in two—its body divided from its brain.
Imagine now, how it moves still, both
sides, the tail dancing, the head dancing.
Believe it is the mother and the father.
Believe it is the mouth and the words.
Believe it is the sin and the sinner—
the tempting, the taking, the apple, the fall,
every one of us guilty, the story of us all.
But then return to the snake, pitiful dead
thing, forcefully denying the split of its being,
longing for life back as a whole, wanting
you to see it for what it is, something
that loves itself so much, it moves across
the boundaries of death, to touch itself
once more, to praise both divided sides
equally, as if it was easy.

"Art should be a gift." Ada Limon

I’m grateful to another reviewer who introduced me to Ada Limon’s work with a link to the first poem, “How to Triumph like a Girl.” Not surprisingly, that poem won a Pushcart Prize. It also sent me straight to Amazon to place a book order. I love everything about Limon’s poems, their strong feminism, their humor and humanity, and their accessibility. I especially love how she deals with difficult issues that face us all (death, hospice, love entanglements) yet manages to leave us feeling uplifted, part of something greater than ourselves. As she said in a Q&A, “Life is suffering. Art should be a gift.” (I hadn’t finished the book before I looked her up on You Tube and watched two readings.)

Most of Limon’s titles are simple and serviceable, but a few are so captivating I’d jump to their pages in an anthology, like these two: “I Remember the Carrots” displays her fierce determination that surfaces again and again in a proud, ta-da! attitude. Limon often writes in almost a stream of consciousness that feels natural yet is surprisingly compact, taking you on a short, zig-zag path to a strong, unexpected ending. “Oh, Please Let It Be Lightning,” begins with a car trip discussion: “…your mother said she wasn’t sure/if one of your ancestors died in childbirth/or was struck by lightning.” The title would have been the expected punch line, but she ends the poem with a much grander bang.

I’d be reading along, simply enjoying the flow and tone of her work when a metaphor or simile would stop me in wonder. Here are a few of my favorites:

“…As if this big
dangerous animal is also a part of me,
that somewhere inside the delicate
skin of my body, there pumps
an 8-pound female horse heart,
giant with power, heavy with blood.”

“If you walk long enough, your crowded head clears,
like how all the cattle run off loudly as you approach.”
(“During the Impossible Age of Everyone”)

“Below the grave, a cold spring runs.
Clear, like a conscience.”
(“The Rewilding”)

Love this book of poems! Reading this Book for the Sixth Time-- It's that good!

This book should have won the National Book Awards...it's that good. Accessible, but smart, edgy, and interesting. Ada is an amazingly talented poet who writes in a beautifully musical way while also being able to tell a good story. This is in my top poetry books this year! Highly Recommend!
