About the Author
Kelly M. Quintanilla is the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. She earned her Ph.D. in Communication from the Pennsylvania State University in 1994, joining the A&M-CC faculty that same year. She was a Professor of the Communication for 16 years, teaching courses in Business & Professional Communication, Teamwork & Leadership, Organizational Communication, Public Relations, and Public Speaking. Additionally, she served as Department Chair/Program Coordinator in Communication from 2000-2009. Over the years, Dr. Quintanilla has received awards for her teaching, service, advising, and scholarship. She has also worked as an executive coach and an organizational communication consultant for a variety of industries. Although she loves her career, her greatest love is spending time with her husband, Anthony and daughter, Logan on the sunny beaches of the South Texas.

Shawn T. Wahl (PhD, University of Nebraska, Lincoln) is a professor of communication and head of the Department of Communication in the School of Communication Studies at Missouri State University (MSU). Prior to MSU, he served as head of the Department of Communication, Mass Media, & Theatre at Angelo State University and as the director of graduate studies at Texas A&M University, Corpus Christi. He is coauthor of Nonverbal Communication for a Lifetime, Business and Professional Communication: KEYS for Workplace Excellence, Persuasion in Your Life, Communication and Culture In Your Life, and Public Relations Principles: Strategies for Professional Success. Shawn has published articles in Communication Education, Communication Research Reports, Communication Teacher, Journal of Family Communication, and Basic Communication Course Annual. Shawn was a faculty participant in the National Communication Association Learning Outcomes in Communication project and is the 2016 President of the Central States Communication Association. In addition, Shawn has worked across the nation as a corporate trainer, communication consultant, and leadership coach in a variety of industries. Outside of his professional work, he enjoys spending time with his family and two Chinese pugs (Jake and Bentley).

Saved myself from paying $70

While my course required the newest edition, my teacher did not mind which edition we used. Chapter are different, but it's all the same information. The newer addition goes in-depth on some topics but you're really not missing out much. It is a great book to use as reference for the rest of your life.

Brilliant- a must for art directors and COPYWRITERS

As a professional copywriter giving a positive review to this book might seem like professional suicide, but to be a copywriter is to develop strong CONCEPTS. Part of that is accepting the responsibility of using words effectively on behalf of your client - and sometimes that means using no words at all.

Really, this book is a collection of brilliant concepts that happen not to need much, if any, copy. It's as a conceptual book that this collection of work really shines.

Also, the concepts are diverse enough that they don't become boring or predictable, unlike some other collections that confine themselves to one medium or style of advertising, i.e. outdoor, television or "sex sells" photography.

I have to admit there is a minute amount of copy in some of these ads, but always less than a sentence. Plus, I think a tiny minority of these concepts would have been stronger communications with a hint more of copy.

All of that said, it's a book that every copywriter, art director or person who like to think of themselves as "creative" should have on their shelves.

I'd even go so far as to say that's it's more useful to have this book than the most recent One Show and it's a heck of a lot cheaper - and less likely to disappear.

Wonderful Original source material

This is an excellently compiled collection of translated original source material regarding the Byzantine Empire. Here you can read about what the Byzantines thought about Byzantine. It's got wonderful sections about relations with the West, the Turks, Culture and Life, Politics, Christianity, etc. If you have any interest in Byzantine, you've got to get this book. Great for not only the serious scholar but the general reader as well. Don't rely on historians to translate history for you; Do it yourself

Contemporary writings make the best historical source material

This book garners together much of the same kind of contemporary writings surrounding the Eastern Roman Empire in Constantinople, as opposed to the western Roman Empire that seems to have expired almost 1000 years earlier. Like Rome, the Byzantine Empire was a polyglot collation of raw power, absolutism, religious freedom, religious tolerance (except towards each other) and extraordinary bursts of energy (see for example the building program carried out by Justinian and the brilliant general ship shown by Belisarius, Justinians most competent general).
Leaving aside some of Justinians scribe, Procopius, and his extraordinary accounts of the Empress Theodora bizarre personal habits, this series of contemporary collation is a rewarding series of observations of important religious, political and military episodes which also deals with important theological differences between Rome and The Patriarch of Constantinople, leading up to the great schism between the two: a more farcical schism I have yet to read about. The work allows the reader to select the sections of Byzantine history that are required and allows a fresh voice to that of the more usual historical texts which tell you what the authors believes to have occurred, and allows a better dissection of what the contemporary writers actually wrote at the relevant time.
Although it is not easy going I commend it to any serious student of the religious disputes that broke out from time to time, such as the dispute between iconoclasts and iconophobes, the results of some of which are still visible today in that brilliant piece of Byzantine church building under Justinian, the Hagia Sofiya (or Aya Sofia, however spelled), the manner in which the Byzantine state was governed, how big the changes were between emperors on such fascinating topics as tax farming, and the remarkable richness of Byzantine society (in good times) and its poverty (in bad times.) Of course some adjustments may need to be made from time to time by comparing the writings by two writes on the same subject, but history is always a subject that requires a balanced approach. In my opinion, this book compilation allows some quite good arguments to be mounted against accepted church (Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox) doctrines based on what was written rather than what people some hundreds of year later assert actually occurred.

Anyone who is into fantasy art will love this early volume of Boris Vallejo.

I have been a real fan of fantasy art for most of my life. My favorite fantasy artist is the amazing Boris Vallejo. Over the years I have purchased most of his calendars and numerous books with his fantastic art collection. This volume (The Fantastic art of Boris Vallejo) is one of his early fantasy art books. Even though this collection came out more than thirty years ago, the sensual beauty of his paintings truly come to life and reveal what a genius the man is when it comes to this kind of art. Unlike the abstract art which looks like blobs of color on canvas, Boris Vallejo's art shows the dynamic realism in his paintings. He began painting science fiction book covers to make a living and he is one of the most sought after fantasy artists today. This collection consists of the art he has created for various books.

This volume provides a short biography and background of the artist. It also briefly explains his unique method to bring out the life in his paintings. Boris' work is incredible!

Since 2009 when I entered Art School, I have been searching for early works by Boris Vallejo. His work has defined the Science-Fiction genre in so many ways. I have also tried to emulate his art in my work too. A very tall order, let me tell you! Anyhoo, I came across "The Fantastic Art of Boris Vallejo" completely by accident. I needed to see his early works to try to see his transition over the years as well as add his work to my collection. I had found more than I could hope for. I would recommend "The Fantastic Art..." to any layman art admirer and collector alike!

Yeah, Boris. He's OK I guess. The only reason I bought this is because I used to have this very same book in High School back in the 80's, and the only reason I had it then is because his work kind of reminds me of Frazetta. It does bring Frazetta to mind, only Boris is a little less imaginative and a little more stiff. But hey, it's art and every body has a different opinion about art.
The one I had back in High School was paperback and this one is hardcover, which is a plus.

One piece of the God puzzle

This book offers a "Cliff Notes" like approach in that it condenses the work of many leading Christian scholars into an easy to read format. It is a case FOR Christ, not a true courtroom "hear both sides of the issue" book.

Some other reviewers disliked the lack of 2-sided arguments (there are no interviews w/leading atheists and/or Jesus Seminar thinkers). Being that the title is the case FOR Christ, I did not hold this expectation and was not bothered by this. However, as a staunch skeptic who was not raised with a Christian background, I supplied much of the case AGAINST Christ in my own head.

WHAT I LIKED: The book presents a good introduction of Christian scholarship and answers to common objections regarding the historicity of the Gospels--objections which already existed in my own mind. Suggestions for further reading (primary sources by the interview subjects) are included for those who desire a more thorough scholarly approach.

WHAT I DID NOT LIKE: I felt the "re-creation" of Strobel's own search was un-necessary and a bit contrived, as were the comments he interjected when he was interviewing his subjects. Perhaps that is a carry over from his journalism days. I would have prefered a more straightforward interview, but this matter of taste is small and overall I found the book worthwhile despite these stylistic objections.

HOW IT AFFECTED ME: I came to this book as a very skeptical, non-practicing agnostic Jew (who was raised w/a religious education), fresh from my reading CS Lewis' Mere Christianity (which I highly recommend). Book 1 of Lewis, with his logic/philosophy helped me see that the existence of God logically made sense, but I did not yet know *which* version of a monotheistic God was correct--the rest of his book didn't resonate for me on the first reading as it dealt specifically w/Christianity. Strobel's book answered my questions regarding history/fact as it related to the New Testament.

Was The Case for Christ "made" for me in this book? Partially, yes. And partially by Lewis too, which I reread after reading Strobel.

My ultimate conversion came through study of these and other sources, which led me to literally ask God to show himself to me in a way that I would be sure that it was indeed God. I mention this because I believe that for a stubborn skeptic like me, no single source (with the possible exception of the Bible, LOL) would have been able to convince me on its own. Rather, it was a combination of sources/experiences that did so. These included reading the above mentioned books, attending a few church services even while I was still very skeptical, opening myself to the possibility that I had been mistaken in my belief that God didn't matter (if there was even a God to begin with) and literally asking God to let me know him if He was indeed real.

Ultimately, the proof came in a manner that goes beyond scientific verifcation or re-creation. Critics of Christianity and of this and other apologetic works make a good point when they claim God cannot be proved scientifically. I agree. God is beyond science. Scientific or logical methods such as textural criticism, formal logic, archaeology, and so on, can help close the gap in accepting the possibility of God's realness, but ultimately, the gap, at least for me, was completely and finally bridged not by book or proof, but by an experience that cannot be tested scientifically nor recreated in a lab. Skeptics, atheists or agnostics who deep down are married to their viewpoints--no matter what--will likely not budge, and may label the non-testability of my "proof experience" as suspect. I don't begrudge that and would have said the same thing. It had to have it happen to me first-hand before I would believe, and I was able to keep God at bay for years due to my own certainty that this God-stuff was for dummies. I was smart and logical and would have none of that God nonsense. So, this experience came as a big surprise--one that in retrospect was very welcome.

Your mileage in reading this book will vary. If you want to learn something, you can. If you are dead set against learning anything new that might be different from what you already know that you know, it is almost guaranteed that this book will have nothing to offer you. I realize that God's allowing us to come to Him only through our own free will sounds like a cop out and is criticized by non-believers as an all too convenient excuse, but as a former non-believer myself (who was proud of it and who ridiculed that free will stuff too), I say, so be it.

The Case For Christ is Enlightening for Christians and Skeptics

Like many American Christians, I was brought to church most Sundays and endured countless sermons and lessons. Despite this seemingly rich education on Christian principles, I never was exposed to a lesson or class on the existence of God; God's existence was assumed as fact. As I matured into my twenties and went to college, the existance of God was no longer taken for granted. I encountered many agnostics and atheists among my many college professors. The net result of their influence was to question my faith in the existance of God. I never lost my faith, but I found it was a faith that could not withstand scrutiny.

Reading Lee Stobel's "The Case For Christ" began in me my search for the certainty of my faith. Strobel's book is an excellent place to start. He presents interviews with several Christian apologetics that involve issues related to the veracity of the Biblical account of Christ, the Son of God.

The issues are as follows:

The trustworthiness of the Gospel accounts.

Historical evidences for Christ outside of the Bible.

Archaeology and the Life of Christ

The "Jesus Seminar" account of the life of Christ.

Did Jesus claim to be equal with God?

Is Jesus the promised scripture's Messiah?

Did Jesus really die on the cross?

Did Jesus really rise from the dead?

Mr. Strobel investigates each issue thoroughly. He approaches the issues as a skeptic who wants to be convinced of the truth. Apparently, Strobel was once a skeptic himself and his investigative journalism convinced him of the truth of his childhod faith in Christ. The only weakness I could find in the book is the lack of rebuttal from those individuals who do not believe in the deity of Jesus. Strobel claims to be the main rebuttal witness, as he assumes the skeptical viewpoint, but he is writing from the position of a believer, and his rebuttals are perhaps not as forceful as a "true" unbeliever.

If you have questions like I did, (and as did Strobel), then this is a good starting point for your journey. There are other books that go into complete detail on all the issues raised here, and you may want to purchase these as well. But this is a very good starting point for answering those nagging doubts about your faith in Christianity and one's faith in the person of Jesus.

OK book, but won't convince skeptics.

I read this book a couple of years ago, when I considered myself a skeptic. Now, I consider myself a Christian. This book is not what convinced me.

If you read the reviews, they are very telling. All the Christians love the book, all the skeptics (whether they be atheist, agnostic, secular humanist, or whatever) hate the book. Everyone is biased; it is impossible not to be. People come into a situation with preconceived notions, and will believe what they want to believe, even when presented with facts that seemingly contradict their views.

Thus, Christians can read this book and come away from it with the view that it reaffirms their faith; skeptics come away from it with the view that it reaffirms their skepticism.

Trying to make the case for faith based on historical and scientific evidence is flawed in and of itself. That's why they call it FAITH. Believing in the divinity of Christ is a leap of faith that one has to take to become a Christian - if it could be proven by scientific and historical evidence, then it wouldn't be faith at all. That's the whole point of it.

I think examining evidence for the existence of the historical Jesus is fine, but when you throw in the key issue of divinity and the resurrection, that's where faith comes in.

The reason I believe in the divinity of Christ has to do with what I feel in my heart, and the major changes that came about in my life due to the change in spiritual perspective that occurred when I went from "skeptic" to "believer". It really is about a personal relationship with God. It has absolutely nothing to do with the church, which is a severely flawed creation organized by man, who has the innate ability to pervert and corrupt everything he is involved with. Likewise, personal faith has very little to do with historical and scientific evidence.

It's very similar to being in love - no one can prove that they're in love - likewise, you can't disprove it. You can't even prove or disprove the existence of love. But you feel it in your heart - you know when you're in love. That's what faith is to me, and to millions of other Christians the world over.

About the Author
Angela Provitera McGlynn is a Professor of Psychology at Mercer County Community College (MCCC) in West Windsor, New Jersey, where she has been teaching for thirty years. She is the co-author (with Florence Rhyn Serlin) of Living with Yourself, Living with Others: A Woman's Guide (Prentice-Hall 1979). She is also the author of three books published by MCCC: Celebrating Diversity: Enhancing Harmony on Campus (1990), Teaching Tips: Improving College Instruction (1992), and Classroom Atmosphere in College: Improving the Teaching/Learning Environment (1996). In addition, she has written numerous journal articles on a wide range of topics, presented workshops across the United States, and appeared on radio and national television programs.

Not just for beginnings, but for the middle & end, too!

I was amazed at how much good advice McGlynn packed into such a short book! I read it in one sitting, and constantly found myself saying, "yes, that's right," or "ok, I'll try that." She not only describes techniques that work for creating a more active learning environment in the classroom, but also (implicitly) explains why they work. To be sure, this is not an "academic book" in the sense of being top heavy with citations and references.
Instead, it is a useful book, written in a very personal, easy-going style. I felt as if I were having a conversation with her, rather than being lectured to. And, of course, that's the kind of classroom she's helping you create, if you follow her advice.

Beneficial for new and seasoned professors alike

Successful Beginnings is divided into seven chapters, the first six of which focus on one of the following themes: course organization, first-day "icebreakers" to help start the semester well, building a good rapport with students throughout the semester, encouraging student participation and interaction, dealing with misbehavior in the classroom, and keeping students motivated through the mid and end-of-semester "blahs". The final chapter summarizes the main points of each prior chapter. Given the variety of subjects and classroom dynamics that professors work with, McGlynn does an admirable job of offering a variety of suggestions on any given topic. That way, even if certain suggestions aren't very applicable to a given professor's situation, others are more likely to be. My guess is that chapters one and four will be most beneficial to all teachers regardless of their subject matter or classroom size.

Now, for a few of the shortcomings. First, although there is likely some merit to the section, "The Chilly Classroom Climate" in chapter three, I think she gets a bit too politically correct here. For better or worse, students and professors alike will always have their biases which will affect the learning environment. Fortunately, as McGlynn herself notes, the suggestions she gives are more about enhancing the learning environment for all students than they are about accommodating "outsider" groups. Also, some of the "get to know you" exercises in chapter two strike me as a bit goofy for certain classes. For example, if you're teaching a calculus or astronomy class, does it really matter that you find out who in the class likes chocolate, is Jewish, has a twin, was born outside the U.S., etc? Probably not. However, if one is teaching a sociology or social psychology class, this might be helpful. In short, the generality of the book is at the same time one of its main strengths and one of its (rather excusable) weaknesses.

Successful Beginnings for College Teaching is by no means the last word on how to be a good teacher, but I doubt the author ever intended it to be. On the other hand, it offers useful suggestions on a variety of relevant topics. As such, it makes a good primer for young professors and a good refresher (or maybe even a renovator) for "old pros".

Took advice from the book and it worked

Last night I taught my first-ever college class and used two of the several techniques from the book. Particularly, I used one of the name games to remember the students names, and after just one class I have every name committed to memory. I also used one of the student bonding excercies -- the "things in common" game -- and it actually worked too well. The class went from being distant to very wound-up, but it was all good.

A GOOD BOOK FOR THE TRUE GRUE COLLECTOR

COLD NORTH KILLERS: CANADIAN SERIAL MURDER by fellow Canadian author Lee Mellor is a well-written compendium of serial killers and unsolved serial killings in Canada.

Mr. Mellor's knowledge of this subject is evident in this informative collection. Each case file is presented with factual details of the crimes and criminals without wading through pages of incremental boring details.

Highly recommended for avid true crime readers.

Not reliable

I can't speak to the entire contents of the book, but I can comment with a good deal of certainty with respect to at least one of his subjects since it involves the person that killed my sister and other innocent women. Mellor appears to have leaned heavily on other writings on the topic that are equally fictional, take liberties with the truth and are simply wrong. One would have expected a higher degree of veracity from a work purported to be non-fiction. If you find this type of genre entertaining, it may be fine; however, if you are interested in a fact-based work, you may be disappointed.

Awesome book. Well detailed well researched.

Ok. I just got this book on friday September 21st. I absolutely love it. The author did his home work. Over 60 serial killers are detailed in this book. The author gives detailed brief accounts of their lives,crimes,and so forth. It is amazing to learn how sick some of theese monsters are or were. Even some gruesome double murderers where included. This book is well written. I recomend it for any serial killer fan,true crime fan,or anybody intrested in this subject line.
