Physiological Ecology of Forest Production, Volume 4: Principles, Processes and Models (Terrestrial Ecology), by J. J. Landsberg, Peter Sa

Process-based models open the way to useful predictions of the future growth rate of forests and provide a means of assessing the probable effects of variations in climate and management on forest productivity. As such they have the potential to overcome the limitations of conventional forest growth and yield models, which are based on mensuration data and assume that climate and atmospheric CO2 concentrations will be the same in the future as they are now.

This book discusses the basic physiological processes that determine the growth of plants, the way they are affected by environmental factors and how we can improve processes that are well-understood such as growth from leaf to stand level and productivity. A theme that runs through the book is integration to show a clear relationship between photosynthesis, respiration, plant nutrient requirements, transpiration, water relations and other factors affecting plant growth that are often looked at separately. This integrated approach will provide the most comprehensive source for process-based modelling, which is valuable to ecologists, plant physiologists, forest planners and environmental scientists.

  • Includes explanations of inherently mathematical models, aided by the use of graphs and diagrams illustrating causal interactions and by examples implemented as Excel spreadsheets
  • Uses a process-based model as a framework for explaining the mechanisms underlying plant growth
  • Integrated approach provides a clear and relatively simple treatment

Most Comprehensive Book on Process Based Forest Growth Models to Date
By MattTyler
The creators of the 3PG process based forest growth model have written one of the most comprehensive and in depth reviews of the literature on the physiological growth of trees and forests from a modeling perspective I've seen to date. Reviews major simulation models for various physiological processes, as well as models that generalize multiple layers of function. Includes many indispensable tables of various model-process parameters from world-wide peer-reviewed research.

Will save anyone creating processed based forest growth models A LOT of time and headaches doing literature review.

Some (less than fatal) weaknesses:

* Coverage of carbon allocation lacks the same depth given to other processes - such as photosynthesis and transpiration - even though height vs. diameter growth is a very crucial topic in forestry. Work by Dr Makela of Finland and other European modelers could be covered in more depth.

* Poor coverage of the processes behind self-thinning - relies almost exclusively on empirical models for this phenomena, when process-based competition models would have greater explanatory power in predicting growth in multi-species forests.

* A bit overly focused on Australian and New Zealand plantation examples - could include more of European and North American examples.

Overall, still an excellent reference for the forest modeler or physiologist.
